Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

i have had a lot of gay friends in my life---roomates with 3 of them....and each one basicaly told me that they just never felt anything towards the opposite sex. that they would try and HOPE they felt a sexual attraction cause maybe life would be easier -- but that it just never came. they would try straight relationships--and that added to their sexual confusion as they would HOPE it would work--but again the feelings weren't there.

so i would go with born

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

I think that it is genetic, and environment only impacts whether the person actually "comes out" or whether they hide the fact that they are gay.

I totally agree!

I have also heard theories that to a degree everyone is slightly homosexual....don't know if I agree with this but I can see the point. We are "attracted" to certain physical and emotional characteristics in people that causes us to be friends with some people, male or female, and not others. The theory says that when you walk into a room the first thing you notice is a persons physical appearance, and male or female, you tend to befriend the person who you are most "attracted" to first, who you feel most comfortable with.

I dont know if i explained it right, but I think you get the point.

I didnt vote b/c I think they are both correct...

I totally believe it is genetic. Environment has nothing to do with it.

When you say genetic - do you mean that one person may be "prone" towards homosexuality based on their family history?

Or do you mean that it's something one is born with - no matter what their family history is.

I'm trying to understand myself the difference of being "born" vs. "genetic."

Genetic meaning "born with." I believe homosexuality is something that is in one's genes - like hair color or eye color. It may or not run in families, genetic doesn't always mean something that is passed on from generation to generation, it can be a spontaneous mutation that happened when that person was concieved.

Thank you so much for clearing that up for me...I've been sitting here scratching my head Chat Icon deciding whether or not I could use the word genetic b/c I was under the impression that it meant "running in the family."

and on that note - I agree with you completely.

I have had many homosexual friends in my life. They always told me it was something they discovered, so I voted that someone becomes homosexual. I think you may have meant it differently then I do, but it is fine either way. I am going to avoid the drama until it really heats up in here. Chat Icon

Nope - that's exactly what I meant...so you answered appropriately.

Discovered = external factors and becoming gay

vs.

Born = always felt that way

I always think of discovered as uncovering something that was always there. For example, math was discovered, not invented. Mathmatical relationships have always existed in nature, and someone just uncovered them. I feel like it is the same thing with homosexuality.

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

i say born because i honestly wonder, in this day and age, what man or woman would CHOOSE to be gay, knowing the discrimination they would face?

i don't know for sure, obviously, but that is my "educated" guess.

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

You are born gay. My brother is gay & it's something that I always knew. I also have other family members & friends that are gay. It was just sort of common knowledge when they came out it was more of a FINALLY you are ready to be yourself in front of us.

IMO The men/woman that "become" gay were just lying to themselves for years. (Most of them will admit it as well)

I believe it is genetic. I don't think people would actually choose to go through a life of discrimination (somewhat) and not having the same rights as someone who is hetero..

How's this for weird - a friend of my SIL (a guy) is gay - and HIS sister is a lesbian...how's that for strange! Chat Icon

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

I think born. I have a family member that is gay and he just always knew he was different. When he was little he may not have been able to pinpoint it and know it was his sexuality, but he always kind of knew. THen as a teenager he came out because he understood himself and his feelings more.

Another reason I don't think it's the environment is because there are friends of mine that I know that are gay... have come out only to certain people and refuse to admit it to their family because they think their family will be upset. So regardless of how their family feels, they are still gay. Doesn't have any connection.

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

I think people are born gay, but that some women may become gay because of sexual abuse (i.e. the abuse has made them uncomfortable being sexual with men).

that's an interesting point... but IMO,, those women aren't actually gay, so to speak, they are just having homosexual relationships with other women. that's part of the reason why i think being gay is genetic.

I'm going with born.

there have been scientific studies that show size differences in certain areas of the brain of hetero and homosexuals.

I have read that most people are on a spectrum, most fall somewhere in the middle (not exlicitly hetero or homo) and there are those that fall at opposite ends (expressly homo or hetero)

I think nurture may have some impact on those that fall in the middle in terms of what their sexual preference ultimately becomes, but I think we are all born with certain predispositions.

I agree with all of this. I know of two people in my life that were probably in the middle, but relationships in their childhood may have had a big influence on who they choose to have sexual relationships with as adults. I would say all of my other gay friends have expressed very strongly that they knew they were gay from a very young age.

Re: WITHOUT drama - Thursday Poll

I truly think it's the way you're born, based on what my gay friends and family members have to say.

A certain relative of mine is really old-school and conservative, and until recently, believed that it was a choice. He changed his mind, and said it's because he realized it's not like gay people have it easy. Given that they still face so much discrimination, negative stereotyping, legal adversity, etc. in this day and age, he now finds it hard to believe that so many people would choose that road for themselves, if they were given a choice.
