I am also curious to know - neither of you have friends or family who rent an illegal apartment on LI? Do you tell them that they should suck it up and buy a house they can't afford? Or, do you tell them that they should move out of state?

Do you have family that rents out an apartment in their house illegally? You should tell them that they should move out of state or downsize because of it. I'm sure that would go over well.

I don't see what the problem with living within one's means is.

But what about when circumstances change? Should the homeowners just up and sell their homes because one lost their job? If they have the means to make an apartment?

I know I am jumping into this conversation late but I wanted to respond to this, especially becuase I have toyed with this in my head.

My parents have a legal apartment in their house. That has always been their "fall back" in the event that something should go wrong and they needed extra money. All the houses on the block are exactly the same, some larger inside because they are not separated.

DH and I bought our house in a neighborhood where multiple family homes are forbidden and we can not ever legally create an apartment in our home and rent it out. Because of this, we have our money organized in a way that if we ever did need it or fall on hard times we have something to draw from.

Re: Spinoff on renting part of your house

I have to agree with the statement that if you should not buy a home you cannot afford and buying a house just dependent on the rental income seems like a bad idea. What if your neighbors rat you out then what? You pay $$$$ in fines and not to mention you can't supplement that income anymore b/c it has been taken away permanently. Its too risky.

If hard time happen as they do I guess thats different or a family member has a need. But if someone is doing it just so they can have extra income or cushy lifestyle then thats not right. Especially for the other homeowners who work hard to pay their property taxes. Whats the big deal? Their is a huge sense of entitlement in this world. What about the people who work hard for a living and do things legally even if they struggle. We need to stop saying that other people are doing it--it doesn't make it right.

Re: Spinoff on renting part of your house

Are people here that naive?

I moved to LI almost 6 years ago. This is probably one of the messiest housing situation area I have ever seen.

I sure hope that when your kids grow up and start their career you don't take any sort of income from them to help with the rent. Or if you do, you will claim it on your income tax return.

Also, make sure they don't go into an illegal apartment. Just tell them to move out of state where they can afford a legal one.

Of course, I think we need some major reforms.

And why are all the brand new aparments either super luxury or for 55+.

What happen to creating legal apartments for young couples that are reasonably priced?

Before I became a home owner, I was renting apartments. Maybe you forgot how it was. Dark and old basement apartments because that all you could afford before you saved enough money to buy a house.

A lot of us have had illegal apartments. It's easy to just turn our heads the other way. That won't fix a thing!

There are housing apartments in Long Island. Maybe not in the nice pretty areas that many people like to stay in. But the housing is there.

And move out of state? Come on. Worst case scenario if you can't find available rentals in Long Island, there are PLENTY of available rentals in very good neighborhoods in Queens.

And i'm not faulting the renters who are living in illegal apartments. I am faulting the landlords who are providing the illegal apartments and not paying their appropriate share of the taxes.

Should we have reform? Sure. Complain to your congressman and vote in November if it means that much to you.

Should you be entitled to break the law because there is no reform? No you shouldn't.

no offense- but given the choice between an affordable apartment in hempstead and an illegal apartment in Merrick- I would take the illegal apartment in Merrick

and as far as Queens goes- I pay more for an Apartment in Bayside then I did for an Ocean front apartment in Long Beach

I have always lived in LEGAL apartments-but most people on this site would have a heart attack if they knew what I paid in rent

None of our family does this. We have 1 friend who does in Suffolk County and they are well aware of my views.

I lived in an apartment for years (and, for a time, with 2 kids) because we could not afford a home. We saved up enough and got better jobs, and now we own a home.

Your reality isn't everyone else's and many people on LI would be homeless without the illegal rentals that there are here here. Complexes typically charge 2 months security, 1 month rentand MANY of them have waiting lists. Not everyone can afford that, even with getting a "better" job so would you rather them end up in shelters and your tax dollars paying for that?

I'm a little disgusted by some of the "better than thou" attitudes on this thread. It's pretty dissapointing to read, that's for sure Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff on renting part of your house

It is easy to say if you can't afford it don't live there but many of you aren't taking into account lost of job, spouse, divorce.... and in todays market it isn't easy to sell a house. Many people actually now owe more than their house is worth.

I have been following this thread and was very hesitant to reply because so many people seem to have completely forgotten compasion. Yes to the people who bought a bigger house just so they can rent it out.... that is wrong. But to the single mother who's husband left her and her house is now worth 100k less then what her mortgage is...what is she supposed to do? Get out? Give me a break. It is so easy to judge when you aren't in that person's shoes. And I really don't think that an extra flush of the toliet a day is that big a deal...expecially if you have cesspools! And as for the cable....so you have cable in your basement...who doesn't?

Everyone is sitting there and yelling about breaking the law....so you've never sped on the LIE or spoke on your cell phone when driving?? Or is that ok because you aren't making money off of it?

In a hardship situation, there can be some understanding but it is still breaking the law. However, saying that you do it because you like the "luxuries" it brings is wrong and should be condemned.
