It's the water. When we travel to family in Dallas, we line our suitcases with a few dozen bagels for them.
It absolutely is. We can't get good ones here in VA for anything. We bring back 2 dozen every time we go to the Island.

Can we talk about the price of milk and cheese too? Seriously, went to the local pizzeria here in Bklyn and they're charging $2.25 for a slice! We normally pay $1.25!!!!!!!!!
yep slice of pizza went up to 2.25 by me too. And chicken rolls used to be 3.25 or now 5.00 and spinach roll is 5.50 I think.
thought maybe they made them larger and thats why the price went up but nope same size

We got pizza last night and paid $18.00 for a pie and 6 garlic knots! It's normally $12 and change.

That is something I'll splurge to get! Especially b/c, being in New York, we have the best bagels everrrrr  I just had one - cinnamon raisin - about an hour or so ago!

The timing is pretty poor. But all kidding aside...
They say that bakeries and pizzerias are really going to feel it financially.
I just saw a sign in a local pizza place on Thursday night that said they had to raise their prices due to the raise in cost of flour, tomatoes and cheese!!
ETA: *NO* price increase could ever stop me from having a bagel when I wanted it!!!

Tell him you are PG and he needs to get over the price of the bagels. Also tell him he is lucky, my poor DH had to try to satisfy my lobster craving every week

My Bar Mitzvah boy won't let me bring lobster in the house He would have had to have taken me out and I was sequstered yesterday.

what about getting a baker's dozen at your favorite place and freezing them yourself?
Just reheat at 350 for about 7 min and everything is good!
(frankly, though, there is no cost too high for a perfect bagel.... I've gone on pilgrimages to old-school shops in uptown manhattan and paid $10 just to sit down (surrounded by elderly men) and nosh on the perfect bagel......

I totally understand the need for bagel store bagels. I cannot imagine what I am going to be paying for my favorite dish of a bagel with honey mustard tuna at Bagel Boss. It was already something like $9.00 because they sell it as a little platter with a side of macaroni salad and because kosher = more expensive. .  Sometimes I just have to have their tuna, though.
Bagels become less expensive if you buy a dozen or if you buy even one plain and put your own butter or cream cheese on it at home. I do not mind bagel store bagels frozen.
Leslie, I didn't know that you don't bring shellfish into the house. Do you have 2 sets of every day dishes? I definitely do not.

Yeah between that and the rising cost of cheese they are in real trouble. A friend of mine owns a pizzeria and his overhead has increased by 50%!

Oh no. We do not keep a kosher home, but this was a simple request that I felt I could comply easily with. I prefer not to cook fish/shellfish here anyway - very hard to get the stink out even with open windows and exhaust.

Considering a bagel currently costs less than $1 by me (a little over that if toasted with a topping), even if the price doubled, I wouldn't go without.
I LOVE bagels.
