Putting a cooktop in an island?

I want so badly to do this (primarily because I want to change the location of my fridge & stove).

DH doesn't think it is a good idea because we won't be able to have a hood over it, and he doesn't think the pop-up vents are good enough. Also, I just read an article on This Old House where one of the authors had this and hated it, and didn't recommend it for anybody.

If you have this, what is your opinion of it? Do you like it? What would you change about it?

Even if you don't have this set-up, any opinions are appreciated!

I have it and love it. Reason is, I can cook and still entertain, talk to my guests, etc..

I do though have to figure out the vent thing myself. One we bought the house, we did not even think to look and figured out the hard way that we did not have one. We are most likely getting one installed over the stove.

Here is a pic

I have it and I LOVE it! I used to not be a fan of them until I got one. I was always worried that grease would get all over and it would be a pain to clean, but we use it alot and I have no complaints. Mine has a motorized vent that is pretty cool and it works beautifully and I've never had any problems with it. They are pretty much in all the houses down here.

I'm trying to find a picture of it for you but I can't. It's a GE Monogram gas stovetop.

We had one in our house in SC and loved it. It did what it was supposed to do and then disappeared. It works just as well as the overhead hood

Re: Putting a cooktop in an island?

we dont have a hood over our stove and it has never been a major issue- my MIL's house also has no hood as well- the only problem is when we grill stuff it gets a bit smokey...

I have a cooktop on my Island and I love it. When I redid my kitchen last year all the designers tried to get me to move it (I had 7 designs done) and it was the one feature that I really wanted to keep. I love that when I have company, they can sit at my dining room table while I cook.

eta...we have no hood either, and it never made a big difference. We have an extractor fan on the wall and I open a window when I cook

I don't have my cooktop on an island, but I do have a 5 burner Bosh cooktop with a down draft. It is fantastic. You push a button and it pops up from the back and it works so good.
