Good service
1. Shortly after being seated, server pleasantly greets us and asks if we would like to order drinks/appetizers
2. Server brings over drinks and asks for order.
3. If drinks are running low, server asks if we would like more drinks At this point, extra napkins are nice as well
4. After meal is brought out, server asks us if everything is okay (preferably when I have not just taken a huge bite of food so I can not respond), brings over additional drinks if applicable.
5. Comes over again when everyone looks to be almost done and ask if we want anything else.

While I realize there are bus boys, please do not let the plates pile up . . . this bothers me, especially since my family usually piles the dirty dishes together for easier removal and I hate when they are still on the table when I am eating my meal.

Re: spinoff to spinoff to spinoff to tipping

Honestly, we are pretty lax.

Being friendly - no lap dances or anything, but general good attitude

Being attentive. Don't get lost for an hour after I ask for another drink/glass of water. ESPECIALLY when its a cheap drink. I know you (not YOU, but waiter-You Chat Icon ) want to push the alcohol to rack up the bill and will come back in a jiffy with my cosmo, but when I ask for another water with lemon, come back with it in this lifetime, please.

If my order gets messed up, an "Oh, I'm sorry - let me take care of that right away" is a winner.

Just being there is key. If its busy, come over and say - I'm so sorry - a few times. And at least look like you mean it.

And bring the bill when asked, and the change promptly.

Thats it. We aren't looking for curtains or china patterns. Just don't p*ss me off, and we are good to go! Chat Icon

Just be attentive and keep me in the loop --

~watch for empty glasses
~make sure empty plates & glasses get taken away
~pace the meal (don't bring the entree out 5 minutes after the appetizer)
~if there's a problem in the kitchen, let me know there's a problem instead of sitting there waiting
~make sure the order is right before you bring it out
~be pleasant

I agree. I'm not looking for servers to do the impossible, but simply being friendly, helpful, and as attentive as possible (given the business of the place, etc.) is good service to me.

- After seating us, taking our drink order promptly and serving it promptly.

- Taking our order when we are ready.

- Communicating with us if there are any issues/delays in our order.

- Serving all our food at around the same time (drive me crazy when everyone but one person has their meal and everyone has to sit waiting).

- Asking how everything is, offering refills.

- Not going off into hiding somewhere so we can't ask for something we need or the check when we're ready.

Re: spinoff to spinoff to spinoff to tipping

because you would know that there are certain types of people that servers hate. and don't go thinking i'm talking about people of different race than myself. I'm talking about trashy people that come in and try to get stuff for free, treat servers badly, and don't know how to behave in restaurants. these are the same people that have you running 100 times in 10 minutes for something they could've told you all at once and in the end don't tip you anyway. the people I was talking about in the other post were completely trashy, raunchy (the weird woman was saying she was vegetarian so I was trying to help her out on some dishes, takes half an hour to decide she wants something we're out of, takes another 20 minutes to decide on salmon. She then tells me that she's starting to like fish again, then her old disgusting husband says "she sure does love fish" and winks. that's crude and just horrific to say to a stranger. these people were in their like late 50's mind you.

but there you go, that's my explanation of "certain types" of people.

Re: spinoff to spinoff to spinoff to tipping

It's easier for me to define 'bad service' actually. I mean there are a lot of variables with good service with me. Sometimes there is just something about the server that makes me think "What a great waiter/waitress" - even if I can't quite put my finger on it!

Bad service - for me - is when the server has an attitude. That sounds awful - but it's true. I have had waitresses roll their eyes because I asked for a dish with no sauce. I have had waitresses huff and puff because I need more time with the menu. And then there are the servers who are completely unhappy and it shows. They are either stone faced - or when they do smile it is so obviously fake and forced it makes you uncomfortable. I recognize that people have bad days - but I guess I don't want that bad day taken out on ME when I go out to eat.

But unless they are absolutely downright RUDE - I give a good tip. Better tip if they are friendly and positive.

I'm not trying to minimize what you are saying, but in any job, you are going to run across people like this.

I don't think it's fair to say "you wouldn't understand or only if you've been a waitress past college you'd understand".

I've been working in the human services field for 10 years. There are some clients and their families that I despise working with. I think some of them are just plain mean, manipulative and in many cases, trying to get over on the system.

However, I still have to hold a professional line, and treat them the same as the clients I adore.

Not that that is easy---at all---but wherever you go and whatever you do, you are going to be dealing with the general public, who very often S.U.C.K.

I think some of the posts on here were harsh and unnecessary, but I still don't think there is anything wrong with being offered feedback for self-reflection.

NO ONE IS PERFECT. AT ANY JOB. That's why feedback is always offered to help us do better.

ETA: Not always, but more times than not, we always have a choice to do what we do for a living. I know people hate hearing this, but if the bad outweighs the good, then yes, you probably should leave.

It's only a matter of time before you start taking your bitterness on a bad customer or two out on others, your coworkers, your husband, etc. etc. (if it hasn't already happened).

i agree with all this, and i would also like to add that i hate when i hand a sever a bill with $$ and they ask, "do you need change" - especially when i hand them a $100 and the bill was $45 or something Chat Icon

just say, "i'll be right back with your change" - let ME tell you, no it's all for you.

Re: spinoff to spinoff to spinoff to tipping

i sometimes ask for odd things- well not really odd (a lemon in my water, a straw, extra pickles)- but if i have to ask more then once and remind the server- that usually aggravates me a bit...

i also think a good server is always aware of what is going on at their tables (drinks, what course they are ready for) and also asks if everything is okay and if anyone needs anything else a few seconds after the food is delivered- i hate when they drop the food off and never return and you just really need some ketchup bad while the fries are still hot and the server is no where to be found!

Re: spinoff to spinoff to spinoff to tipping

I'm pretty easy going about service as long as it isn't lazy service. I waitressed for long enough to know what it's like and to know the difference between a busy waitress not being able to be as attentive and a lazy one. If I see a waitress running around and it takes her a while to get to my table because of that, that is okay. If it isn't busy and they just can't be bothered, that is another story although I have never tipped less then 15%.

Another pet peeve of mine....waitstaff that doesn't write down orders and then gets it wrong. That really bugs me.

Re: spinoff to spinoff to spinoff to tipping

For me it's a nice, personable server, one that refills drinks and comes to check in on us.... also, once I'm done and signal for the check, I like it to come quickly because I like to eat and get out... so delaying the check (unless I see the server is just overwhelmingly busy) kind of frustrates me. But I try to take the situation into account and see if there is a reason for slower than normal service or something.

what to you is good service?

Being polite / friendly and having a good attitude always.

Checking in soon after we sit down to ask if we'd like drinks and/or appetizers.

Bringing the drinks right away and asking if we're ready to order.

Being polite if we are NOT ready to order. NOT disappearing if we aren't ready to order and checking back in 5 minutes later.

Asking if we'd like more to drink when drinks get low.

Clearly and promptly communicating any delays from the kitchen. (On more than one occasion, I've tipped above what I normally would even though kitchen service was slow -- b/c the server handled the situation tactfully and communicated clearly...)

Checking orders to make sure they are right before bringing them out. I don't think asking for a few "special" things (no cheese, extra BBQ on the side, etc.) is unreasonable -- so I expect them to be correct.

Bringing dishes out at the same time - so the table doesn't have to wait for one or two people to get served after their plates come.

Timing the order so that entrees don't come out before we're done with the appetizers.

Making sure all finished plates, etc. are taken away, BUT -- not clearing 1 or 2 dinner plates if other people are still eating. (This irks me...)

Coming back about 5 minutes after we get our food to make sure everything is okay and see if we need anything. (Coming back 30 seconds after we're served isn't better service - it's worse. I haven't even had a chance to take a bite yet. This happens all the time...)

Checking in at least one more time during the meal to see if we need anything and always keeping an eye on the drinks.

Keeping an eye on when we are finished and not making us sit there for 15 minutes without having the plates cleared or asking if we'd like anything else.

I don't want to have to ask more than once for something. If I ask for more BBQ sauce, for example, I shouldn't have to ask 3 times and wait 20 minutes for it.

Bringing the check promptly, coming to take payment promptly, and promptly bringing the receipt back.

Saying thank you when bringing the check, picking up the check, and leaving the receipt / change.

ETA -- That said, I think good service is an overall thing. I'm not going to say "I'm not tipping as much b/c she came back too soon after we got our food" or "she took DH's plate away while I was still eating!" I think the most important thing is having a good attitude and being attentive. It's a huge pet peeve of mine when the server disappears...
