Spinoff to the tipping spinoff
do you tip based on pre-tax total or the total total?
I'm a geek. I tip based upon total total.

Re: Spinoff to the tipping spinoff
I am an over tipper. I go by the service we got. It's normally more then it should be.
ETA: it would be the total.

Pre-tax
Why would you include sales tax in your calculation? I mean, it's nice that you give extra, but doesn't make sense to tip on something that you're required to pay and that neither you nor the waiter, nor the restaurant benefit from.

yeah most people don't realize it but technically you are supposed to tip on the pre-tax amount--not the taxed amount.
sometimes i go by pre-tax amount and other times in a group--usually taxed amount.

Re: Spinoff to the tipping spinoff
Usually on the total. For the most part, 15-20% of the tax is barely going to add a $1-3 to the tip.

Re: Spinoff to the tipping spinoff
The completely total....If the bill is $48 (I round to $50) - multiply the first number by 2 and that's my tip amount ($10.)
$94 ($90) -> 9 * 2 = $18 tip
$18 ($20) -> 2 * 2 = $4 tip

Re: Spinoff to the tipping spinoff
we usually tip on the pretax amount. in NJ, the tax is 7%, so we usually triple the tax for 21% tip, or a little less than triple if the service wasn't that great
