Re: Guys and cars

Honestly, I wouldn't care if he was buying a "sporty" car. If you already have a minivan, you can use that car to drive the kids around. If he needs to take the kids for whatever reason, I would just "switch cars" with him for the day.

This is what I would do:

Instead of forcing him to buy a "practical" car (based on your other thread), i would force him to buy an "affordable car".

I think getting a car you can afford in your financial situation is more important than demanding it be practical. If this means an "cheaper affordable, yet sporty car", so be it.

Sometimes you have to make small steps first in order to make larger steps later.

My two cents.

REAL men want BIG cars.... I have a pickup truck (with carseats in the back), and my next vehicle will be a quad-cab Dodge Ram, with 4 doors (with carseats).

Dodge Magnum (with a HEMI), or a Charger (with a HEMI) is a real vehicle (and have plenty of room for carseats). Those little cars are too wimpy for me. IMAGE

OMG we just got rid of our Dodge Hemi Pickup. We had the quad cab & it was huge. It only got 8 MPGChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly, the Hemi was not that much better than the Magnum engine they used to push in the Dodge Pick-ups. My old Dodge I had before I married DH had the 5.9 Magnum & it was faster, louder and more fuel efficientChat Icon Chat Icon

They financially can't afford a new car, it is not about a wife trying to control her husband.

That's why I said I wouldn't care of the car is sporty or not (if I currently drove a minivan).

I would just care if its affordable and within the budget at this point. If that means a used 5 year old car that happens to be sporty, then thats fine.

DW and I both mutually agreed that we would always have a pickup. I use it so often, we would be lost without it. However, I still think of the family when buying trucks. My current truck has two car seats in the back, and we use it fairly often. I want a bigger truck next time so I can still keep DC in the back when they get bigger. It all comes down to family first.... if I can satisfy my needs after that, then I'm thrilled, but I have to make sure I take care of my important priorities first and foremost.

Re: Guys and cars

I have a small SUV but had a mid sized sedan when we got married. DH still has his Sebring convertible which is in excellent condition (and paid for). Its kind of sporty, but not obnoxiously sporty and I am sure we will have it for quite some time before we buy a new car. I did, however, request that the next car he chooses be a 4-door sedan. He agreed and will probably choose something a lot more practical than a 2-door car for our needs.

Re: Guys and cars

Now that we have a child, my husband wouldn't even consider buying a car that we couldn't fit our entire family in. So no, it's not a guy thing, it's a self-centered thing. There's nothign wrong with wanting a sports car, but there's something wrong with buying one when you can't afford one, and buying one when you need a car that you can fit your family in. Sorry.

Re: Guys and cars

Also, on the "well, the minivan is for carrying DC" front, you really need both vehicles to be able to carry DC. On Saturdays, I take DS in my truck to karate, and DW takes DD to Gymboree in the car. There's been several occasions where we had to keep the car overnight at the shop while they waited for a part to be delivered. We all went in my truck during that time. If something happens to the minivan (accident, engine stops working, other mechanical problem), how will you get the kids back home? If that happens with us, I can fit everyone in my truck, and we can figure things out from there.
