Guys and cars

is it just my DH, but why does he ONLY want a car that is sporty and small? He wants a man's car and he sees nothing wrong with it at all. To me, he's not a single, 20 year old male. He's a married family man so he needs something more practical. Anytime I suggest something to him or don't agree on anything he likes, he gets pizzed off. I feel he should get a decent size car with a backseat that will hold car seats, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg for insurance and maintence/repairs. I just don't get it. He hardly ever drives the kids around, but I still feel like we should be able to if need be. Am I wrong about this? We might need another car because his is going to die soon and it'll cost more in repairs than we can afford and we have another year to pay off on it. Is it just me or does anyone else agree? He either picks out something that's tiny and sporty, or something like an Audi, Acura, etc. that costs a lot in repairs and maintenance. We've already owned a used BMW and couldn't afford the maintenance. He wants to get what he wants to get and that's it. He says why can't I get something I want??? Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: That I did get the car I wanted which is a minivan, so to him I have the family car. Chat Icon

I am bad like this too, so I cannot comment in that way, but once you have kids practicality has to take over. Although we are probably getting enduro cars again for the first time in years....I guess it has to come out somehow.Chat Icon

Re: Guys and cars

REAL men want BIG cars.... I have a pickup truck (with carseats in the back), and my next vehicle will be a quad-cab Dodge Ram, with 4 doors (with carseats).

Dodge Magnum (with a HEMI), or a Charger (with a HEMI) is a real vehicle (and have plenty of room for carseats). Those little cars are too wimpy for me. External Image

Re: Guys and cars

He needs to compromise. Make sure you're not bossing him around telling him he "can't" have something. That will help him be a bit more reasonable.
Ask him what he likes in a sedan that's not too expensive or foreign.
Maybe a Subaru WRX?

Re: Guys and cars

Is it possible he can buy an inexpensive car as a toy.....Like I drive everyday an 05 Subaru Legacy, and then I have my 1966 Volkswagen Beetle that I bring to shows and cruise in on nice days.....

Is that a possibility?

Is he kidding? Didn't you just lose your job and are worried about bills and he wants a new car? I would never be looking for a new car with all of that going on.

Re: Guys and cars

My dh wanted a Mustang and that is what he got. It is tight in the backseat but if we need more room, we drive my SUV.

Re: Guys and cars

my DH is the same way, but we don't have kids yet. he currently drives a 350Z which has no back seat and can get costly for maintenance and repairs. before he bought it and were car shopping, he test drove a bunch of cars and priced them out. we decided to go with the sports car b/c he said it would make him happy, that he drives a lot and wanted to feel comfortable in his car. he LOVES this car. but we agreed that his next car will be much more practical (kid friendly). in your situation, i would thoroughly research all cars in a set price range (maybe set a limit) and have him test drive them. i'm sure you can come to a compromise.

THANK YOU!!! Chat Icon I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! Chat Icon

Get this.... he just called me to tell me he found a car for around $18900.00 WHAT!!! Is he F'ing kidding me? (Sorry, I hardly use that language, but...)

Ok, I agree with only one thing. That the last 2 cars I wanted I got, but that was because our situations were different then. We didn't have the financial problems, nor with the first car I got, we didn't even have kids. AAAAhhhhhh! He wonders why I get upset! Chat Icon Chat Icon

And he said his priorities are not screwed up!?!?!?!

agreed!!

I really think you guys need to sit down and talk about your finances. The fact that he is even considering something like that scares me!

Same here.... in that case, price and practicality have the priority. Yes, he may want a small, sporty car, but life happens, and needs to be addressed before he can think about having (very expensive) fun.

There are still sporty, used, affordable, 4-door cars that can make everyone happy.

DH has a sports car and has 2 Britax Roundabouts in the back and used to drop the kids off almost everyday with it. It is possible.

But ours in paid off - I would be looking into price, but don't rule out 2 doors if they are affordable

I completely agree with this on all accounts.

Not for nothing - you keep saying over and over and over - you have no money, you can't do this, you can't do that, so then where is this money going to come from for his 'new' car?
Honestly, my DH would walk or hitch a ride if things were that bad, or we would make it work with what we have.
I don't know why the two of you don't see eye to eye on this situation - but he should since all the work you guys are doing on the house - to sell it so you have money.

You both really need to outway your options here

You can still have a semi sporty car in a 4 door. I think I need to talk to him. hahaha. I will show him a few 4 doors that I am sure he will love.

Re: Guys and cars

I understand what you're going through. My DH is a gear head and loves his toys. Right before we got married and he was looking for a new car I had to sit him down and explain "priorities." It made me seem like a big fat meannie but I didnt care. sometimes they need to be beat over the head. But just like he had to compromise, I had to compromise too. I specifically said that it could not be rear wheel drive and that it needed to be practical for when we have children. DH picked the Rav-4 which I think was a perfectly practical choice Chat Icon

Does he talk about having a corvette ever single day that he is alive? Yes, but now he prefaces it with after we have a house...etc.
