Do we have racial equality in the US?
I was talking to someone about politics. She was saying that black people now have the same opportunities white people have.
I have to disagree. I think it's a LOT better, but I also think we have a long way to go. I cited the achievement gap on the SAT (black students score over 200 points lower than white students on a 1600 scale), and colleges with few black students.
She said "well they have good jobs..they drive buses and are big sports stars"
I went  Because isn't that the archaic stereotype?
Anyway, do you think we have achieved racial equality in America? Why or why not?

Easy answer - no.
The opportunities are there but some races and cultures simply have to work harder to reach the same goals. The country has a long way to go.

its sad but we have become to accept that. Depending on where you go, its not a big issue but most still have a color problem...

I think no.
however
I believe that some things should not be based on your race and it is unfair to change things to make it easier for a "race" to be able to acheive it.
Take the FDNY test for example. They made it or want to make it pass/fail so it is fair. I find this to be ridiculous. This type of job should be based on education and merit, not on having to meet the quota on having a racially balanced department. If you do not have the smarts to pass the test, you have no business taking it. Like me for instance, I have a masters. Some would think Im smart. But I looked at practice exams...I WOULD NEVER PASS!!!!

Definitely not. I think people can have an isolated view on this based on what part of the country you live in. I have seen first hand that a lot of minorities still do not have all the same opportunities that whites have.
Sometimes when I think about this though I wonder if it's demographics not so much race? I mean there are a lot of white people that feel they don't have the same opportunities as others.

i think the simple fact that obama's race is even mentioned in the same sentence as his run for presidential candidacy means that no, we do not.

No, not even close. Sometimes I think it's even worse now, because we live under the guise of equality, that masks some serious, terrifying, inequality.
And, I really do believe the root of much of this inequality is our school system, at the elementary level.
I work at the U.S. Dept. of Education and my office handles allegations of discrimination, including racial, at any public institution, and based on my short 9 months in this job, I can say with 100% certainty that we aren't even close to equality and that racial discrimination is alive and thriving, unfortunately.

I think it is much more complex then just yes and no. And I know many white people who have felt the effects trying "fix" racial inequality. I think by having programs that force "racial equality" or months like "Black History month" creates inequality, and animosity.
I could go on, but I know that this will turn to drama, and I am with Babybunny. I just do not have it in me today.
