I'm really surprised with some of these statements that you've been making, Jen.
I agree...IMHO, Jen, you are out of line and have been more than once recently...maybe we should not express our views if they are not in line with your own
Totally agree. This is why lost of people say you shouldn't talk about politics!
The reason we have A VOTE is because not everyone likes candidates. Thats their opnion. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
Exactly.
SO WHY would you make such a comment like that? She said she doesn't like him leave it at that.

Because if she feels that strongly there should be a reason, if it's legit it can only help to share, but it's her choice. I already apologized for the other comment AND edited it out

Which is why some people choose to avoid it. if you choose to engage, you have to be prepared for what comes with it, esp on this site.

Re: Who would you vote for #1
both mccain and obama scare me. i wouldn't vote for either.
if it comes down to those 2, i won't vote. i've voted in every local and national election since i was 18, but i will exercise my right NOT to vote if it's between these 2.
no one needs to know my reasons WHY i think either is scary and not fit to be president. that's what's great about elections the way we do them--they're private.

Re: Who would you vote for #1
I think what is interesting are the people that voted that they wouldn't vote. Obama is not my choice. However, he represents my party affiliation and if he got the nomination I would vote for him. I think people take the presidential elections as a popularity contest. There are many people that don't like Hillary just because they don't LIKE her. However, when I cast my vote, I am voting for someone whose decisions are going to most match my own. As far as political platforms and beliefs, Clinton and obama are not that far off...in essence they want the same things. While on the flip side, McCain doesn't support the things that are important to me.

Ok...
Clarification.
I asked, encouraged, even dared her to share her reasons. I did not and could not force her to tell, or to change her opinion, or how she votes.
She has decided for herself not to share. Not a big deal.
ETA: I like to hear opinions. I like to challenge and be challenged, especially about politics. The elections are my superbowl. People debate endlessly and passionately about which team is the best. This is is much more important and multi-faceted.

Re: Who would you vote for #1
I just wanted to add if my reason for not voting for Obama is b/c his father was a Muslim, that's *my* right.
just like it's anyone elses right not to vote for Liberman b/c he's a Jew, or someone else who is a Mormon, etc.
who's to say what is a *valid* reason and what isn't?

I think all of those reasons represent ignorance and bigotry. But that's my opinion. I can't control what someone else does with their vote. But I can voice my opinion about it.

And I can exercise my opinion by saying it's a sucky reason to vote for someone. Honestly I don't see what the big deal is.

Re: Who would you vote for #1
I think it should be a law that everyone has to vote and if you don't you get a fine. It works in this country (Australia). People seem interested in politics b/c they have to vote. They can't understand why half of Americans DON'T vote.
Also it doesn't mean showing up and pulling any lever, you just have to go. Yes some people may just throw their vote away, but some people would read up on it etc.
ETA- I would vote Obama.

ETA- I would vote Obama. This is interesting to me. How does this get enforced? Also, is the media coverage there as slanted and biased as here?
I have to say, last time I was in Europe the main topic of conversation at the pubs was politics, and not just local politics either - global politics and international affairs to such an extent that I have never heard in the US. It amazes me how we are so full of ourselves that we press the US way of democracy, but we know so little about our own politics or how our decisions affect the rest of the world. We know very little about our global neighbors, and it seems to me that we do not care to know in a grand sense.

Wow...this is sort of interesting, though completely antithetical to the concept of personal liberty.
I don't think we should fine those who are too stupid and/or too lazy to vote!! It's their right. Though I can see how the stupid/lazy vote would favor one party more than the other.... Sort of like the ex-felon vote...
BTW, my vote would be McCain.

Re: Who would you vote for #1
If the election is Obama v. McCain I would not vote. I have voted in every election I was able to vote in. I want Clinton to win. Personally it really upsets me every time Obama says I am against the war and never voted for the war. Of course he can say that - HE WAS NOT IN OFFICE WHEN THE VOTE WAS MADE. I also disagree with McCain and don't want to be in Iraq forever. I am also upset with Obama's health care plan.

I am honestly not 100% decided yet. Right now I am leaning towards McCain, but I have to research more. I will admit that I have not been following it as much as I should.
