Since it is Ash Wednesday
I thought I would ask a Catholic question. How do you fellow Catholics (or anyone else who wants to chime in) feel about allowing Priests to marry?

I have no opposition to that at all.
That's how it was way back when and it worked just fine.

Re: Since it is Ash Wednesday
I have no problem with it. Most other clergy are allowed to marry and dare I say...it's likely a reason why the Catholic church is having difficulty recruiting clergy. Not to mention there are certain human behaviors that cannot be oppressed just because you are a priest.

I was just thinking about that at lunch.... I went to St Kilian for their 12:15 mass and the priest that gave my ashes looked about 25!

Same here... I had a very young priest give me ashes too.
I think it would be great if priests could marry.

Unfortunately, I think that if the Catholic church does not modify with the times, it will lose many young parishioners as well as clergy. JMHO

I'm all for it, and it would probably result in more men becoming priests.

I agree with this too. I joke with DH that when we were in pre-cana they basically ask you to sign over your 1st born to the Catholic Church (ok, stretching the truth).

Precana...there were 10 couples all over 30 , living together and the catholic church was telling us to abstain before marriage... time to focus on something new.

Priests should be able to marry and I think women should be able to be priests as well. I curious to see if anyone disagrees with this.

Re: Since it is Ash Wednesday
I agree with priests being able to marry, I think it is completely ridiculous that they can't. But I think it can be dangerous to say that a religion must progress with the times. I don't think allowing a priest to marry is progressing with the times, I think it is just the right thing to do and nowhere in the bible does it say that they shouldn't.
But to imply that a religion should progress with the times I think can be dangerous. I don't think we should change the foundation of the Catholic religion to suit people. IF someone wants to have premaritial sex, yes it is their choice, but I don't think that the religion should say that is alright, just because the general population of America choose to have premaritial sex.
Changing a religion to fit what we want is actually sort of against what Jesus teaches.

I DEFINATELY think priests should be able to marry. I think its part of whats wrong with the priests in the catholic religion. I honestly dont think its normal that they are still not allowed to.

If a deacon is married when he becomes a deacon it is ok. If his wife dies he is not allowed to remarry.
A deacon can not perform all of the sacraments like a priest can.

yes, I had a deacon do our convalidation ceremony and he was married. he did tell us that he took an oath that when his wife dies, he will not remarry so not sure what that is all about but that is what he told us

I also think if they are unmarried when they become a deacon, they cannot remarry.
