Re: Q about lent
For Roman Catholics the Lenten season starts on Ash Wednesday - but I think that a lot of churches try to appeal to the secular thought process and the sign was probably to remind people that Feb 8th is the first Friday without meat.

ohhh that makes sense. thanks for the clarification.
on a side note - do you say "happy lent" to someone if you see them with ashes? it just reminds me of yom kippur... you're not supposed to say "happy yom kippur" because it's a day of fasting and repentence, but instead you're suppsoed to wish the person an "easy fast." what, if anything, do you do/say for lent?

Re: Q about lent
You don't really say anything to a person with ashes. At least no one has ever wished me a Hppy Lent - but I wouldn't be offended if they did.

Re: Q about lent
lent is the catholic equivalent to yom yippur or rammadan....
nope, you don't say happy lent. we're supposed to be reflective and repentant for those weeks....

Re: Q about lent
i don't have anything to add. but i wanted to say that you made me laugh.
i have never thought of it this way (i am catholic) and then i pictured myself jokingly going around to my family and friends saying "happy lent" and seeing their expression.
i laughed out loud and i told my husband and he laughed (he's not catholic) so then I added to it saying that he has to go buy me a gift for the holiday and we need to do holiday cards!
ok..I know random thought. Just wanted to share because you made my day.
