anyone car shopping...
Disclaimer: not saying this is true of ALL car dealerships. but just found out from someone who worked at a dealiership for years.
we all know the sales pitch is well thought oout, planned out, the whole strategy of when to call the big boss in with "this is THE BEST I CAN DO" speech.
but I also found out that when the saleperson leaves, they put the phone on intercom (or whatever is the right word) and listen to the "behind closed doors" conversation you have with hubby while they are gone and play their sales pitch based on that when they get back to the room
again, this is NOT the case for all car dealerships, but has been done before, lets just say that for a fact.

Re: anyone car shopping...
That totally makes sense!!! When DH and I bought our Murano, we weren't really in the market to buy a car that day. When the salesperson left, DH and I discussed how we weren't sure, and that we would go home and work it out with the numbers and stuff. Well, when the guy came back, he made it impossible for us to leave gracefully (ordered a pizza for us when we said we hadn't had dinner, and let us leave without giving a check for the downpayment when I said I didn't have my checkbook or credit card with us).
Wow -- now I know to go outside to talk in private!!

Re: anyone car shopping...
yep. a friend of ours just found this out, and he "played it in his favor" and totally had the right "behind closed doors conversation" (he knew facts and info and was fully prepared with a comeback. I ddint catch all the details, but they immediately got defensive because they got the hint that he knew way too much "inside info" of the deal process and they werent able to play their game with him.

Re: anyone car shopping...
We went car shopping a few months ago and the guy refused to let us leave...I wonder if that is b/c he heard DH say I want my dad to go over the numbers and we will go from there.

Re: anyone car shopping...
Rob has been looking into possibly getting a truck. Prices are a bit steep for us but that's another issue...LOL
Anways we have looked around while the salesman went to "talk with their manager". However we didn't know that they did this intercom thingy...LOL
Now that I know we will either step out of the room or speak in Italian...

Re: anyone car shopping...
that's pretty low. I guess it doesn't matter because if I didn't get the price I wanted with the options I wouldn't buy anyway.
At the Toyota dealer in Massapequa, they talk with you at a round table with no phones. They go to a big desk in the front and talk to the sales manager. I guess that's why I spent the least time at Toyota and the least money. No BS there for us.

Re: anyone car shopping...
This is why DH and I talk cr@p about the salesman when they leave. Either how their hair is ugly or how we should invite him over for a 3some. They never get any info on us and they usually comeback with a red face.

yes, that's true for sure. Not sure about the rest though. DH said its an old tale on the books for more than 20 years.... Not saying it doesn't happen, but he's never had it done where he is
Im SURE your DHs dealership is one of the "good ones" Its a shame the others put the good, honest people like your hubby in a tough spot. But theyve been in business so long, (didnt you say it was 20-30yrs?) theyre doing sOMETHING RIGHT ! Customers know the honest ones !

Re: anyone car shopping...
This never happened to us while car shopping but it happened to us when DJ shopping prior to our wedding. We obviously didn't go with that DJ.

We went in there yesterday.. and left quickly. I just got a bad vibe from the place, like it was a factory. It reminded me of that reality show in the car dealership on A&E. The little tables and not desks made it feel like the salespeople arent there longer than 3 months and that's why they don't bother to give people desks.
Plus you'd think the salesperson could speak in full sentences, button his shirt and put down his collar. We went to another Toyota dealer to browse, and we thought it was much better. (Although we made a decision to not get a toyota.)

Re: anyone car shopping...
I have I HATE car shopping. I actually just decided on a toyota highlander. I was leaning towards leasing a new vehicle, but just wasnt comfortable with that decision, so i went to my very last car lot and found an 03 highlander. They were "firm" on the price but ended up coming down 900.00 and re-painting a lot of it.
