Re: Weird or not? Tacky? Not sure....
Posted by Chatham-Chick Has your friend had housewarming parties before or had a bridal shower? Would she be able to furnish and/or afford much of the things she needs w/o a party regardless of whether she rents or owns?
well she was living with her baby's daddy for the past 10-11 years. they broke up--but she continued to live in the house with him for the past year because she couldn't afford to move out.
now she has a new boyfriend -- and i think he makes a little more money than her--and that is why she's finally moving out--cause she has someone to share rent with.
she's never had a bridal shower or anything like that---no engagement, no marriage or anything.

Re: Weird or not? Tacky? Not sure....
probably in bad taste to mention it in the voicemail but if she is a good friend she might not have realized that it would come off that way...maybe she feels close enough to you to be able to tell you..know what I mean?? I hope that made sense...

My first reaction to this situation was
IMO I do think it's a bit tacky she mentioned it, in a voicemail. I had a housewarming party and we did not register. Guests were very generous and brought gifts anyway. I wasn't expecting them. I just wanted family and friends over for a party and a good time.

Tacky. I think it is tacky to register for housewarming. I've never heard of this? Is it a new thing?

I think its tacky that she registered AND tacky that she mentioned it. I DO think since its her new home, you should bring something, but she shouldnt specifically ask for it.

OH yeah, it's tacky. And DH's friend and his wife and her MOTHER registered for their house warming party as well (I posted about it, July 07) they had been married for 4 years and had that stuff in storage and registered.
Oh, and the BEST part, they lived with her MOTHER (and still do!)

I don't think registering is tacky. I think it's a good way to keep organized on what you need or eventually want - plus they give discounts post registry event date.
Mentioning it was the tacky part in my opinion. It made it more like it was a gift solicitation.

Definitely tacky!!! If someone did this for a wedding it would be tacky so the same applies for housewarming parties. I know a few of my friends have had apartment warming parties. I usually get them something small, but no one has ever told me where they are "registered"

Re: Weird or not? Tacky? Not sure....
I think it's tacky she said that, but it would be a housewarming party. I always take something when someone moves....either a nice pot, glasses, knife set, new home ornament, candles, or a basket from LL Bean that has coffee and pancake mix. I would NEVER register for gifts. Even when we bought our house we didn't do that and really I would only do that if I was buying ahouse. I think it's a bit greedy.

Re: Weird or not? Tacky? Not sure....
I guess my opinion hereis about the VM, if she can go out of her way to register, then she should have sent out invites.
I agree a home is a home regardless, (not everyone owns in a ifetime) but to leave it in a VM is a bit odd.
