yes, by definition, they are an alcoholic:

Alcoholic: A person who drinks alcoholic substances habitually and to excess or who suffers from alcoholism.

that definition doesn't mean that they are.. it says that they have to drink habitually AND excessively.

i don't think so. i think it depends more on the NEED to consume alcohol than how often they do so (don't those health studies say something about having a glass of wine every night?)

I agree. Drinking daily in moderation is perfectly healty. It's the NEED for the drink, and also the impact on a person's life. Even if you can get plastered every night and then wake up in the morning fine and have no problems at work, relationships, etc...then IMO you're not an alcoholic...

i guess by definition yes.

but i have a girlfiriend that has a glass of wine every day after a long day. it relaxes her..

When I can afford this, I do this too. I have no physical dependency on alcohol, but I enjoy wine and it's a nice way to unwind.

My opinion is yes. I am not going to try and cite sources or really give an explanation. It is simply my opinion. I don't think there is a reason to have a drink every day.

Of course you have a right to your opinion, however, certain households have a culture where having a glass of wine is part of a day...like a PP said it's almost like coffee. Now if you don't like alchohol or wine/beer then I could totally see not un derstanding this. When I met my DH I was selling wine and we had CASES in my garage. We had wine every night. Now we may have wine or a cordial 2 nights during the week. We are not alchoholics.

Yes, I can see this -- My father has a good friend who is originally from France -- it is just how he grew up. They always had a glass of wine with meals... It was their culture.

I posted, like I stated, b/c a convo at work got me thinking -- then, the more I thought about it -- there are a handful of people that come to mind when I think alcoholic - and their prob is NOT that they have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner - their prob is that they cannot go anywhere without drinking - especially in social situations - it is like their crutch - they can't even have a conversation with you until they have had about, on average, 3 drinks - it's like my husband and i say to each other "ok don't approach 'so and so' until i've seen him complete drink number three" b/c we KNOW that he won't be able to converse with us! Chat Icon Then, once he has had a few - we know "ok it's a green light to approach" and then he is very nice to talk to! It's that black and white - scary.

But then I do know others that just drink a glass of wine with dinner or whatever - and then they can, if they want to, go weeks w/o drinking - a friend of mine wanted to cut out extra calories so she stopped drinking but she was a "glass of wine a night" person - but she stopped for like six months- then, there are alcoholics that I know of (that are in AA) that, when they drank, only drank on weekends! But they were still alcoholics - I think, and this is why I posted, that asking this question and seeing all these responses has really shed some light on this for me and I understand it a lot better now. It is interesting but at the same time it is scary b/c it made me realize the handful of people I know - well, they have some problems Chat Icon

I disagree with this...I know a couple who have at least a bottle of wine together every night (usually more) and run a successful business. But they are definitely "functioning" alcoholics. They are still alcoholics, his Dr. told him numerous times to stop drinking and he won't because he can't. They even admit they have a problem, but as long as they can live their life they are happy. They are still alcoholics, though.
If you NEED to drink, you are an alcoholic...if you enjoy a drink, you are not. It's pretty simple.

If just the mere fact of "drinking everyday" made you an alcoholic, then several European countries are just chock full of alcoholics then...

Drinking every day does not - in and of itself - make someone an alcoholic. In fact, there are PLENTY of alcoholics who do NOT drink everyday.

If just by having a drink everyday makes you an alcoholic, then Europe is a continent of alkies.

I was going to say the same thing.... I think it is just a way of life there.

If you have one drink every night then no I would not consider you an alcoholic. If you start having 3-4 a night then you may be an alcoholic. I do not believe it has to interfere with your relationships or with your job in order for you to be an alcoholic. People who only really drink at night, but drink heavily are functional alcoholics and typically hide their addiction with only their immediate family members knowing about the problem

Functional Alcoholic

I strongly disagree with this statement. If you are drinking ever night and get plastered you are an alcoholic. Perhaps it does not affect your outside relationships, but it definitely affects people in your immediate family. Sure you get to work on time, do your job, take care of your family and kids during the day, but in the evening you are distant and not quite the same.

Re: Your opinions please -

If you mean drinks more than one or two glasses of wine with dinner than I think yes. If the person is getting drunk or needs to have that drink then there is a problem. If they are having it as a drink of preference and not in excess then I say no.
