Do you think this is wierd?
DH was invited by a client for dinner at their house with me and DD. The client is married with school age kids. She also happens to be from the same country as DH.
DH is designing and building the furniture for this woman's apartment. He has met with her (and sometimes her DH) numerous times.
He thinks its wierd to mix business with socializing and thinks he should come up with an excuse to get out of dinner together.
What do you think?

I think its nice. She is making a really kind gesture, she thinks she has something in common with him and probably thinks very highly of him. Personally, I would go. You might make a new friend!!! Why not?

I have friends at work who I've gone out to dinner as a couple with - and we are invited to DH's business partner's house every month, to all their family weddings, bar mitzvah's, etc. I don't think it's unusual at all - I think the opposite - this is a great way for him to network, expose himself more and gain more respect in the community he's trying to get more work in.

Also, custom-built furniture is much different than if DH was just a furniture salesman at Seamans or something. There is more of a connection between DH and the client.
I don't think it's weird.

I don't think it's wierd either. My husband and I have become friends with some of his customers. One couple even came to our wedding!!
He also does construction.

Yes, I find it a little odd. Our contractor's salesperson (the one we signed with) kept inviting us over to his house for dinner and for a BBQ and I found it strange. You are selling a job. Not the time to mix.
However, if you click with a person under a business pretense, I see no reason why you can't pursue a friendship. So it's really up to your DH and the vibe he gets from them. If he doesn't see himself being friends with them outside of this business relationship, then maybe he shouldn't "lead them on", so to speak.  I would probably suggest he say yes to this one dinner (since he didn't say no right away, at this point it might seem rude) and then no more.
For us, we didn't really feel a "click" with this guy and sure enough, as soon as we signed on the dotted line, our "new friend" was never heard from again.

Agreed. A very good friend of mine makes custom furniture and he made the mistake once of socializing with his client...the next thing he was doing was "throwing in" things for free and was taken advantage of.

You make a good point, and that is exactly what he is concerned with.
He did click with the woman- they are from the same country and background, but they are older than us. She does say that she has a lot of friends she will recommend him to, once he is done with her work. Her husband (who loves DH) is a developper who could provide a lot of work to DH. He is building a big apartment building in Park Slope (my dream place to live)- so you never know...
But I see your point. Maybe it is better to wait until after the business is done.
I left the decision entirely up to DH. I just didn't really understand what was so wierd- but now I see your point.
I am letting DH decide

I agree. Plus, this is classic networking. Trust me, she will be one of his largest referral sources. I would go w/ DH and DD.
