Yup, go right ahead!
And if you do, be sure to pick up a bottle of folic acid.

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
As per my doc yesterday, she said she could write me a perscription, or I could just go buy them. So, I just got the Target ones since I have seen girls on here talk about them.
I like them better than my multi cause they are smaller and they don't smell funky!

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
If you get a prescription & have the option to do mail order, I would do that. Often you get a 90 day supply for a lot less $$$.
Also it's worth asking your ob/gyn for samples. I know people that have had to switch because of difficulty with one over the other (amount of iron)

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
also, take a DHA supplement. you should take 300-400mg a day. The FDA released a report a while ago saying that DHA is likely as important as folic acid for nervous system development, and they decdied that dose should suffice for pregnant women.
You can buy expecta DHA online... it's inexpensive, and the same DHA they put in formula....

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
My co-worker'd Doctor told her to do that. ANd asked for me, and he said yes, it's a good idea to start taking them while TTC

yep, DHA is almost always a seperate gel capsule. I take 300 mg a day + target prenatal, which has all the folic acid and other necessary vitamins....
It's pretty shocking that more Dr's don't insist their patients take it... the FDA has been encouraging Dr's to treat DHA like folic acid, and have all pregnant / TTC patients take it, especially since we can't eat fish like salmon, due to the mercury risk, and flax seed oil also shouldn't be consumed during pregnancy.

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
as long as the prenatal has the 100% daily recommended amount of folic acid for pregnant and breast feeding women, you do not need to add extra folic acid. if you do decide to, you should ask your doctor FIRST before mixing pills. everyone's body has different needs due to our own personal health histories. what might be right for you might be detrimental to my personal health. ask your doctor what he/she recommends. my doctor told me to just take any old OTC prenatal. he did not want me on a prescription until i was pregnant---but other women on here have doctors who want them on prescription pills for whatever reason. neither is right--each is doing what's right for his patient.
please ask your doctor what you should do. asking for help is wonderful, but with things like medications/pills, it really is a personal thing. you probably don't need anything extra besides a regular OTC prenatal but only your doctor can tell you that. best of luck with your TTC journey!

I agree with this, this will be TMI, but I have always had issues with constipation. My sister took OTC pre-natal vits and they made her constipation worse (it's a family trait, woohoo) I have been using prescribed pre-natals and have had no issues with constipation or naseua. Not all formulas are the same, so if you have issues with one, you may want to try another.
We use caremark for mail order presciptions and pay 2 month co-pay for a 3 month supply.

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
my dr. just prescribed me primacare and when i picked it up, i almost died from sticker shock...$30 for 30 pills!!! at costco even! yikes!
however, it is full of DHA and omega 3s and folic acid all in one giant purple horse pill.....the omega 3 fish oil is supposed to be a natural stoll softener to alleviate the problems with all the iron....i'm only on day 3, but i am wondering if the target brand 90 Ct for $7.99 is all that different. LOL...

Re: can you take any prenatal vitamins??
The ones my doctor prescribed to me got me sick. I took 2 flintstone vitamins every day and it gave me the required folic acid I needed.
