Re: Chipping in on gifts

I think my point is when there are a million gilfts on a registry and 5 people chip in on one big gift, i feel like more could be bought then just the one big ticket item. kwim?

I know what you're saying BUT, I was always very excited to see the big ticket items go off my registry. The smaller stuff I could buy myself or get at a later time. I'd much rather get a stroller or car seat than 5 outfits. Its not about the quantity.

My close friends and I always chip in for something, it works out better as we always do something expensive, Spa days, stuff like that.

I agree with this and i felt the same way. i'd much rather have the car seat then the burp cloths.

i was just curious to see what others thought of this.

I chip in on gifts with others to make a larger purchase, like a stroller..etc.

Normally I purchase a solo gift, but sometimes chipping in allows for a bigger item

ditto.

I know for my cousins shower, I wanted to spend about $30. So did my sister. We got together with three other girls and was able to buy her the whole comforter set for the baby. I think she made out better than what I could have gotten her for $30.

Of course it's nice if you can buy a big ticket item on your own, but that's often not feasible. For those who aren't financially fortunate enough to be able to do that individually I think chippnig in with others is a great alternative.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

As a recipient, i don't mind it at all. As a giver, I am not a fan. I have been burned in the past by people flaking or not paying up their share, so now I just buy my own gifts.

For me personally I like to buy my own gift and not chip in. I don't think one way or the other of people that do it.

I don't chip in on gifts usually. Actually once or twice I did. I'm not a fan of it, but will if I have to. Meaning if someone has expensive things on their registry than I will have to cip in with others.

same here....I'm co-hosting a baby shower next month and instead of Kelly and I spending money on clothes and what not we put how much we were spending together and bougt her the crib she wanted. To me I would rather have a crib then 15 nb outfits or what not....For weddings, Christmas, anniversaries, holidays ect I tend to go solo, but for baby shower I like to chip in

my family is just different when it comes to gifts, i think.

for example, for my baby shower i got all the big ticket items. and each one was from one person. my sister bought me teh pack and play, my mom the infant stroller, etc.

it's just not something we did.

Ok I would expect a grandma or SIL to get a "big gift" on their own, but a regular guest - i.e. friend, no way. In that case I would think chipping in would be the norm for a PNP, stroller or carseat.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I don't know - everyone in my office chipped in to get me the stroller I registered for and really appreciated it... if they all went seperately, I would have wound up with all these cheaper, smaller items and still would have had to buy the stroller...

I've chipped in on big-ticket items, but when I do, I like to buy a little something extra individually, as well, especially if I'm very close to the recipient.

I agree, if I can't afford the $200 carseat, I will go in with someone or others to buy it. It's not like 2 people going in on a gift that is $25...it's when things are $100 and up.

Me either. I'm going to spend the same whether I chip in for a more expensive item or purchase a different gift myself.

Same here

i don't mind it.. it think its nice to see the recepient get some of the bigger ticket items. i'm a bridesmaid in a wedding in may, and for the shower the 4 bridesmaids all went in and got them all their bedding. i saw the bride last night and she must have been registry peeking- lol and she was telling me she looked and her bedding got bought and she was so excited that now they don't have to go out and get it.
so i think its nice to be able to get them the big items, because the smaller items will be easier for them to buy themselves...

Exactly how I feel. Always keep in mind that any present or gesture should be appreciated, regardless of price. Sometimes we fall into the trap of evaluating someone's kindness by how expensive a present they got you.

If you get a diaper bag from 10 people, yea I'd say that's strange. But not everyone can afford to buy one big-ticket item on their own.

My cousins chipped in to complete my entire bath set, and I greatly appreciated it. My sister surprised me by buying my Kitchenaid mixer & attachments on her own - I was floored by that. It was completely unexpected.

I agree, I didn't expect friends to buy the big gifts.

I really just wnated to see what others did.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

Sometimes I chip in on gifts with my mom and sister and we buy the most expensive thing. It works out for us and for the person were buying it for since no one is gonna spend alot of money for something on there own.

Re: Chipping in on gifts

I prefer to get my own thing to give. This actually just came up for a bridal shower I went to and some people were being really cheap so some people would have been contributing more than others. I didn't think that was right and I didn't want to be a part of such a cheapy gift. I felt much better about giving my own gift.

I am a huge fan of chipping in on gifts. personally I so much rather the large staple gifts that will last forever rather than all the small gifts

I chip in all the time. It's great because you can get a bigger item.
