I agree. He was hailed a hero after 9/11, but a lot of people seemed to have forgotten how unpopular he was as of September 10, 2001.

I'm not sure what he did that was so damn special on 9/11. He did exactly what he should ahve done as mayor..stand up, show support. He only looked good because of how poorly Bush handled it. He didn't fight terrorists.

Re: Rudy Giuliani

Flashback: Robertson Agreed That America "Deserved" 9/11
By Greg Sargent - November 7, 2007, 11:00AM
In light of Pat Robertson's endorsement today of former NYC Mayor and Churchillian 9/11 hero Rudy Giuliani, it seems worth recalling that even as the smoke was still rising from the site a few days later, Robertson had this to say about the disaster in a TV appearance with Jerry Falwell:

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve," said Falwell, appearing yesterday on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," hosted by Robertson.
"Jerry, that's my feeling," Robertson responded. "I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population."

Falwell said the American Civil Liberties Union has "got to take a lot of blame for this," again winning Robertson's agreement: "Well, yes."

Subsequent to that, Falwell placed some of the blame for 9/11 squarely on a range of Americans -- civil liberties groups, feminists, homosexuals, abortion rights supporters -- who have tried to "secularize" America. Robertson didn't disagree. Today Rudy gladly accepted his endorsement.

Re: Rudy Giuliani

i don't think it will be much of an issue if he loses tonight.... I personally think he'll be out of the race soon (I heard on the radio that there were more reporters than supporters at his rally today)... to answer the question, no I don't think that he would make a good president

Re: Rudy Giuliani

Here's a summary form Wikipedia of what he did to his second wife, Donna Hanover. I've heard his own children don't speak with him.

Beginning in 1996, Giuliani and Hanover's public relationship became distant, with Hanover appearing at few public events.[164] In 1997, a Vanity Fair article reported that Giuliani had a romantic relationship with Cristyne Lategano, the mayor's communications director.[165] The mayor and Lategano denied the allegations. On Father's Day, 1995 Giuliani had told reporters that he was returning to Gracie Mansion to play ball with Andrew. However, he instead went to City Hall, to a basement suite with his press secretary. Three hours later, Hanover, angered, appeared at City Hall; yet a mayoral aide prevented her from entering the suite.[166]

Giuliani met Judith Nathan, a sales manager for a pharmaceutical company, in May 1999 at Club Macanudo, an Upper East Side cigar bar;[167] he took the initiative in forming an ongoing relationship[167] that was kept secret for almost a year.[168] Beginning in summer 1999, costs for his New York Police Department security detail during weekend visits to her in Southhampton, New York were charged to obscure city agencies.[169][170] In early 2000, Nathan began getting city-provided chauffeur services from the police department.[170] By March 2000, Giuliani had stopped wearing his wedding ring,[171] and his and Nathan's appearances together at functions and events became publicly visible[171][172] but not mentioned in the press.[173] In early May 2000, the New York Daily News and then the New York Post broke news of Giuliani's relationship with Nathan.[173] Giuliani first publicly acknowledged her on May 3, 2000, stating that Nathan was his "very good friend."[171]

On May 10, 2000, Giuliani called a press conference to announce that he intended to separate from Hanover.[174][175] Hanover, however, had not been told about his plans before his press conference,[176] an omission for which Giuliani was widely criticized.[177] Giuliani now went on to praise Nathan as a "very, very fine woman", and said about his marriage with Hanover, that "over the course of some period of time in many ways, we've grown to live independent and separate lives." Hours later Hanover said, "I had hoped that we could keep this marriage together. For several years, it was difficult to participate in Rudy's public life because of his relationship with one staff member," a reference to Lategano

ETA: By March 2007, The New York Times and the New York Daily News reported that Rudy Giuliani had become estranged from both his son Andrew and his daughter Caroline, missing major events in their lives, such as graduations, and sometimes going long stretches without talking to them, and that neither of them was taking part in his presidential campaign.[186][187] Caroline uses her mother's surname, Hanover, rather than Giuliani's, and according to reports, she did not inform Giuliani when she was accepted to Harvard.[178] Caroline apparently linked her personal Facebook page to a page related to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama.[188][189] After a slate.com contributor reported this link, Caroline removed it from her Facebook page.[190]

Re: Rudy Giuliani

[edit] Iraq
Giuliani was described by Newsweek magazine in January of 2007 as "one of the most consistent cheerleaders for the president’s handling of the war in Iraq."[31] Later that year he supported Bush's proposal for a surge in the number of U.S. troops in Iraq.[32]

[edit] Domestic Surveillance
Giuliani has supported Bush's tactic of using domestic surveillance.[33]. He stated that "[...] we have to remain a country that has the Patriot Act, a country that has electronic surveillance to use to find out about these plots that may be being planned."[34]

[edit] Waterboarding and interrogation methods
Giuliani has supported "waterboarding" in a situation where "we know that there's going to be another attack and these people (terrorists) know about it."[35] He also has stated that defining sleep deprivation as torture is "silly."[36] In regards to interrogating terrorists to prevent attack, Giuliani said that he "would tell the people who had to do the interrogation to use every method they could think of. It shouldn't be torture, but every method they can think of."[37]

Re: Rudy Giuliani

I think he did a lot of great things for NYC... he cleaned up the city big time, reduced crime, and revitalized a lot of city programs and services that weren't getting the job done.

that said, i think he rides on 9.11 too much. ANY mayor that was in office that day and the months after would have done the same thing he did...so his "I'm a hero" thing is getting old.

i dont' think he would be a great President because IMO he does not have the foreign policy experience and knowledge necessary.... but then again, none of those other boneheads running do either....

Yes, I think he would make a great pres - he was a wonderful Mayor and made me love my City even more then I did before him. Chat Icon

I don't know if he'll make it though - I don't think his advisors had a very good game plan and everyone keeps saying that he is the next to go Chat Icon

Re: Rudy Giuliani

I think he was a great mayor who cleaned up NY and made it a lot safer. I don't agree with how he went about some of it but when a city is spiraling out of control somebody has to step in and say enough. That is what Rudy did. I think he would have a lot better chance if he stopped only using 9/11 and started telling people other things he did.

Re: Rudy Giuliani

I understand he "cleaned up the city" but I also think he went too far on that.

I honestly don't see what there is to like about him. He's a bully and he has turned his back on NYC, and he's changed his views so many times it makes my head spin..he accepted the endorsement of Pat Fricking Robertson..and what he did to Donna Hanover is just sick.

Re: Rudy Giuliani

I just wanted to add that there is no way I would vote for him in a presidential race. I just don't think he's strong enough to be a president. But I think he would have run a better campaign if he didn't focus on 9/11 so much. How he reacted on 9/11 speaks for itself. America realizes it. tell us what else you did.

It's kind of like what annoyed me about John Kerry 4 years ago when he ran against Bush. He just kept saying vote for me, I'm not George Bush. Yeah ok, we get that. But why else should we vote for you?

AMEN! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Aside from the fact that I absolutely hate him and wouldn't vote for him if he were running for president of the PTA, I don't think he's given any compelling reasons to vote for him

That and he can't seem to reconcile his liberal past with his shiny new right-wing views

Really? Couldn't tell! LOL Chat Icon Sorry, couldn't resist!

But for my opinion - yes, I like what he did for the city and he has administrative experience. He was also a prosecutor and handled difficult work situations very well in his early years. That being said, on the con side I think he needs more foreign experience - just like I thought Bill Clinton needed back in the day.

ITA on all counts and with all your posts. Aside from having trouble with his newly hatched right wing views, the fact that his own children can't stand him says a lot. I shutter to think that the future of the supreme court could be in his hands (or any republician's for that matter)

ITA. And h tried to stay in office even though his term was up. He tried to make it seem as though we would get hit again if Bloomberg was allowed to take office. PLUS, he was not as great as it seemed on the surface in the after-effects of the 9/11 *parading* he did.

Ugh I hate him, and he is a total hypocrite. Don't get me started on his family sh!t...

I have very mixed feelings about him and I always have. He started a war against poor and homeless people, some of whom lost what little they had. I saw that first hand as I was a legal services attorney during his administration. On the other hand, I lived in Manhattan for 4 wonderful years during his administration and I might never have moved there if the city had not been cleaned up the way it was.

I agree with your second point. I went to college at FIT in Manhattan. If not for him cleaning up Manhattan, I would have NEVER been able to walk to FIT from Penn Station after dark, by myself as an 18 year old freshman without being mugged. After college, I worked in Manhattan for 9 years and he really did do SO MUCH for NYC. He cleaned it up, made it safer and more prosperous. After 9/11 he did make me FEEL safe in MY CITY where I worked. I was there on 9/11, saw the second plane go into tower 2. I worked for a non-profit org that helped small businesses (like shoe shiners, bodegas, etc.) recover financially from that attack for over four years. I truly feel that Rudy did help this city before and especially after 9/11.

That being said, he would not be the best candidate for president IMHO. I would vote for McCain b/c I like what he stands for.
