what is the best retirement ??
401 k? roth ira? something else? im looking to start something on my own to supplement what i already have

if your company matches on a 401K - take it - it's free money
If they match 50% - just think of it like an automatic 50% return on your investment! Even if they only match 25% - that's still damn good!
but ROTH IRA will give you more freedom about what to do with the money.

DH's company doesn't match a/t either but he still contributes to his 403b. It reduces a bit of the tax burden which is nice. But he also contributes to a Roth IRA which is nice since it grows tax free. He also has a traditional IRA but he hasn't really contributed to it; he's just rolled old retirement plans into it.

all of the retirement savings vehicles are good. Anytime someone gives you money, well that's pretty good. Having your money grow tax deferred is pretty damn amazing too, since when you do take it out your tax bracket will be much lower than it is now.
