Why do people fake accents?!?
I was talking to a girl I knew from Childhood, and all of a sudden (like a switch went off) she started talking w/ a Boston/Massachusetts accent.
She has never lived there, does not date anyone from there, and she said she does not even know anyone from there!
I found that so odd!

Oh, like Brittney and Madonna, huh? I had a girl I worked with who used to do this. It was so fake and so obvious I couldn't stand it and called her on it every chance I got. Very annoying

I mean, Dan and I have been in RI for about 10 years, so we have picked up a few things, but would never go as far as to fake an accent...as a matter of fact, people around here always say to us, you are not from here, ahh you? LMAO---We say our R's where they should be said!

People are strange, I have no idea why they do what they do. I can see if they live somewhere and pick up the accent but the people who do it without ever living in whatever region their new accent is from, I just can't figure out.
Wait, did that make any sense at all?
ETA: DH is from Pakistan, I'm going to start speaking with a Pakistani accent tomorrow.

Well Madonna has lived in England for a bit, she has probably picked up a few things. You would be surprised how you pick up things when you move.

when I was a child I used to affect a french accent when speaking to my mother at Pathmark I thought it was hysterical then (and took the sting out of the cart full of "no frills" brand)
I don't think it would bother me much though...I pick up different words just from being around people or watching tv...some people just absorb things like that more readily....

agreed. I went to school in London for only 6 months and my friends said I spoke with a slight accent when I came back. Not so much the ACCENT but certain british slang and how I enunciated...
you just pick up specific mannerisms and sayings...
britney... is just bat sh*t insane...

haha i can't see why people fake it and try to pass it off as their normal speech...
BUT im guilty of faking accents while drinking...
one night me and my buddy brian were bar hopping around Manhattan for happy hour and every cab ride we'd choose to have different accents... one ride irish, one ride english, one ride indian.. u get the point..
5 bars later we had 7 diff. accent in the span of the last 10 minute cab ride.. we realized we were done for the night

My god, I hope you don't meet me. You would accuse me of faking my accent something awful.
When you live in a certain place, you do start to pick up what people say, for instance, I have a client called HBoS. I can't call them AitchBawss in my LI accent, no one would know what I was talking about, so I have to modify what I say. Also, plenty of regional things come into your everyday vocabulary, so its not faking an accent as much as it is modifying your own to fit in.

i know what you mean- but i have to say- my DH is Irish and after 6 years of being together I feel like we've both picked up each other's accents to some extent.
It freaks me out bc there once was this girl who was dating one of DH's friends- she was all italian and form lynbrook- she had the most forced irish accent ever- it was so bazar.
People today will ask tell me I have an accent and I get embarrassed bc I so don't want to be that girl who fakes it- but I can't help it! I think it has something to do with the annunciation like a previous poster said.

I have never faked an accent but I have noticed that when I am around people who share an LI dialect, my own LI dialect is more pronounced. When I am around people who do not share the same dialect, it is far less and I may even pick up some local nuances.
For example, when I went to college up in Syracuse, I left LI saying words like "ball" (bawl), "laundry" (lawndry), and "call" (cawl). By the time I got home for winter break, I was saying "bahl," "lahndry," and "cahl." People thought I was from another planet.

When I first moved to Maryland I had the total LI accent. People down here and ESPECIALLY my coworkers at Southwest Airlines (read:Southerners, Texans) went CRAZY over it- and drew attention to it every chance they got.
Well..... over the past 8+years my *accent* is virtually gone. I have picked up some pronounciations from my husband (born and raised in OH), plus I took a phonetics course in grad school that taught me MANY of my words were mispronounced (forest, orange, horrible).
That said, when I tell people I grew up in NY, specifically LI, they ALWAYS say, "Where's your accent?" People now just assume I'm from the Midwest Makes me a little sad because I've lost some of my *identity* I suppose.
But~ I can do a MEAN imitation of ya'll

My accent is much worse than it should be, and I don't know why.
When I lived in Florida, I was made fun of constantly by my coworkers. But when I came back, someone pointed out that I actually uttered "y'all" once or twice.
I do find though that it's hard for me NOT to be affected by a southern accent when I'm on the phone. I don't do it on purpose. I used to work with people in Virginia who I spoke to weekly and the drawls by this one guy in particular, I LOVED it. He was such a southern gentleman. He pointed it out to me, that by the time we get off the phone, I start mixing the NY with the drawl which sounds terrible, apparently.
Everyone is different so some people pick it up faster than others. Some people NEVER pick it up, or just don't realize. I wouldn't assume someone who actually lives in a place with a pronounced accent is faking it.
In your friend's case, if she's never lived there and isn't picking it up from her husband or you or someone she knows, yeah that's kind of lame.

In Madonnas defense, it is very easy to pick up an English accent if you spend any amount of time there. Actually, I had to learn how to get rid of mine when I was younger b/c kids used to tease me  Now if I speak with my cousin on the phone or Skype it comes back within an hour
Several friends that I have moved there in their teen or adult lives and all sound native at this point.
BUT given that the OP was talking about someone who has never lived/visited/dated, etc....that is just weird then
