Re: Baptism vs Christening

i think its just an idea that 2 words were made to refer to the same thing.

perhaps people felt the word "baptism" was antequated--and therefore likened the word "Christening".

but as far as i know---its the same

I had a priest once who always used to say-
You baptize a person.
You christen a boat.

I've heard that before too!

when you look up baptism on wikipedia--it comes up with mostly information on baptizing an infant or person. and when you enter Christening--it links to baptism and boat christenings.

I recently looked this up and it means the same thing, however saw that one site said baptism=the act of.
Christening=ceremony.

Right in the article states this:
So, generally speaking, since there's no difference anymore in what happens whether you call it a "baptism" or a "christening," you can use either term depending on your personal preference, regardless of what sort of Christianity you practice. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Baptism vs Christening

I was told by a priest that the annointing oils used in a baptism are called Chrism- hence the word christening, to annoint with Chrism- The annointing with oils reminds us that we are inheritors of the Kingdom of God.

Its the same things, but Catholics call it "Baptism" and I guess other Christians call it "Chistening".
