Am I going to get arrested?
Cablevision is my cable and internet provider....
Last night, I received a letter from them stating that "someone" in my household (I realized it was my 13 y/o brother) downloaded a movie online and was infringing on copyright laws.
Essentially, cablevision was contacted by the copyright protection company for the movie. Cablevision cannot disclose our information to them, but it's done as a warning to stop the illegal downloading.
Fortunately, we got off with a warning, and now my little brother has full access to my itunes/netflix, etc. to prevent such things from happening again....
I'm terrified!!!!!!!!!!

yikes....well at least it was a warning and thats it. DHs little brother downloads movies illegally all the time---and i've warned FIL that he shoudln't let him do it.
make sure your lil bro doesn't use any illegal music downloading either--such as limewire or kazaa...that could trace back to you too!

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they were sending that email to almost everyone. If you accuse everyone, most people are downloading at least something they shouldn't. If they only get a few people to stop doing that, they've had a successful blitz.
It worked for you, and I'm sure it will work for most other people as well.

You'd be so proud of him....
He got a 97 on the Co-Op and got accepted into Farrell's Honors Program, and got scholarships to both Xaverian and Bishop Ford....
We're just waiting on the Specialized HS Exam grades...he wants to go to Stuyvesant....
Our baby is growing up...

Seriously though...he's 13 y/o and a computer geek...he said something about getting something that blocks the IP Address....
Needless to say, I told my mother if I get locked up, she's bailing me out...

Um, no. They aren't sending this stuff to everyone. Legitimate companies and their attorneys don't operate that way.
Believe it or not these "big bad companies" who own intellectual property are NOT out to get everyone. They rightfully own valuable property and have a right to protect it. Just b/c many in society have just decided that they have a right to steal that property doesn't make it right or okay.
To the OP, I'd heed that letter as a SERIOUS warning that copyright (and other intellectual property) laws are serious and are enforced by the owners. I'd take it as an opportunity to make absolutely sure that your thirteen year-old brother understands why what he did was wrong and the possible consequences of his actions. Don't get too upset about it -- I'm sure you'll be fine, and I'd bet that your brother just didn't understand what he was doing. However, you really need to make sure he doesn't do it again since he's already on the radar.
Because so much is so easily available online today and because intellectual property is so intangible, many kids just don't understand that what they are doing is wrong. It's a tough concept even for many adults to grasp (given the sheer numbers of people downloading material illegally).
I STILL don't understand why people think it's perfectly fine to steal music and movies online, but think it's wrong to walk into a store and shoplift. BOTH are stealing and BOTH are equally as wrong... but that's another thread.
Don't fret too much - Just make sure it doesn't happen again!

he's a good and smart kid. and he loves you so I don't think this will be happening again.
maybe take him on a tour of Spotford, just in case

Hey, I went there..on a 4yr scholarship..I was on the soccer team..people used to call me Louis because they would confuse it with my older sibling's name, I'm not CR'an, but pretty damned close to it, and we're very close in age...wait, do I know you??? Did we... ?
