Wow. I'm just speechless that the first cop let a drunk driver who had already hit a car go free and that you had to do what you did in order to stop him! I think that cop should get fired for putting you and the public in harms way like that. I would definitely be reporting it to the police.

you know what i was just thinking....i wonder if the 1st cop let the guy go cause either a)the DD was a cop as well or b)he had like a shield or PBA card from someone who is a cop.

i know that it happens that cops will let other cops off in cases like that. totally not right, but its something that does happen.

Could be. I also know plenty of cops, especially NYPD who drive drunk. All. The. Time.

my sister was rear-ended by an off duty Nassau Co. cop years ago. she smelled alcohol on his breath and said he was slurring his speech. but of course, when the cops came, he was not arrested. Chat Icon thank God she wasn't hurt! (no one was)

Re: DH just stopped a drunk driver

first - yes it wasn't the smartest thing to do- but you don't know my DH

(and our intention was to get the plate number for the Jeep owner- not to be citizens on patrol - but we weren;t going to stand by and let him put the people of our town in danger)

Jake has taken knives and guns off drunks before- his leather coat has a hole in from when he worked in the hamptons (the winter brings a different crowd)

plus he is trained in MMA style fighting- so you try to tell him stopping a drunk driver isn't a great idea

second- the first 2 cops let this guy go with out in leaving a note on the jeep he hit - so they let him leave the scene of an accident

then when we say him driving again- we felt we had no choice but to stop him- he was passed out - almost side swiped 5 cars and was 50 yards from the highway

Jake was up at the shopping center today and the cops (we have an annex that was empty last night - which is NOT suppose to be- I knocked on the door- if the cop was there this guy could have been stopped before he hit the street) and from the looks Jake got- they got in trouble- which is good (Jake has an unforgetable car)

and would he do it again- you bet

it turns out the guys brother works for the Bayside EMTChat Icon

and is a herion addict

Re: DH just stopped a drunk driver

Your DH really did the citizens of your town (and anyone on that drunk guys way home) a service.

To me, what upsets me the most is that these cops ENABLE this to happen. Just because you have a badge, doesn't mean you do the honest and right thing. If this man would have killed someone it would have been on these cop's head- and no one would never know if your DH hadn't been there.

It just breaks my heart that these people who are there to "Serve and protect" will enable someone to kill just because they know someone. Chat Icon

Re: DH just stopped a drunk driver

we couldn't just got home and say not my problem

we have a huge movie theater in that shopping center- filled with kids on a friday night

what if he hit one?

there is no way I could live with myself knowing we could have stopped him and didn't b/c it's "dangerous"

Jake had already spoken with the guy and knew he wasn't a threat

even if he had a gun- he couldn't drive straight or speak- let alone shoot someone

Re: DH just stopped a drunk driver

That is so awesome! You and your DH are my heros.

My friend was killed 7 years ago this summer by a drunk driver. Someone reported a van driving on RT 135 S going 100 miles an hour and no cops came to get him... he got off at Hempstead Tnpk (still going 100mph) and blew a light, killing my friend. I wish someone would have done something to stop him(although I realize at 100mph, what can you do?).

You guys are awesome, thanks to you and DH there are people alive today that might not have been!!!

Re: DH just stopped a drunk driver

First of all I want to say that I commend your husband, DD are my pet peeve. With that being said my DH is a cop in Queens and works the midnight shift. There have been times when a Sgt. tells him no, the person cannot be arrested. They are incredibly understaffed (sometimes only 4 cars out in one precinct), and if for example they have a call of shots fired, they may have to leave the current scene if instructed to do so. My DH has had to pass a motor vehicle accident for HOURS, because if they are busy that night and it doesn't come over as an accident with injuries then its not considered a priority. It is incredibly frustrating to him.
Like I said it doesn't condone leaving this scene, but sometimes things are beyond their control.
And you're right, if it was NYPD in the car hitting everyone it gets really hairy. My DH has arrested "one of his own", but it was a bad situation all around.
But I still applaud your DH Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: DH just stopped a drunk driver

So glad your DH was put himself out there to stop this idiot. It saved a whole bunch of lives.

I am still wondering about the cop who originally saw him and then let him go. How dumb is that when you plainly see he hit a few cars. Chat Icon Chat Icon I guess that cop didnt have a care in the world.
