Prenatals?
When should you start taking prenatal vitamins? Can you start when you start TTC? Also, did you get a prescription from your doctor or buy OTC? If you bought OTC, where did you get yours?
TIA

Re: Prenatals?
my RE gave me a prescription for prima care prenatals which you get from the pharmacist. They like you to be on them for a few months before TTC b/c it lowers the baby's risk when you do get pg of a lot of birth defects by a large %. HTH.

Re: Prenatals?
Mine are from my doctor. I have a bad stomach so sometimes if I can't take it I take 1mg of folic acid, but I got that from my dr as well. I am pretty sure you can take an OTC one, just make sure there is at least 400mg ( i think!) of folic acid!

Re: Prenatals?
When Joe and I decided we were looking at TTC within the next 1-2 yrs I started on prenatals and other vitamins. It's been about 1yr now and I take 1 prenatal( walmart brand..you get 260 for $8.96), 1 folic acid, 1 calcium citrate, 1 omega 3 fish oil, and my perscriptions. Now that Joe and I are going to beable to start TTC in March I made an appointment to see my OB a nd they said they wouldn't change anything i'm on and when we do get pg my walmart vitamins are fine to continue with. I have tried several prescriptions but all made me feel very The walmart ones are the only ones I have ever taken with no problems. I have noticed in the last year my hair and nails grow faster and healthier, and I feel better. Good luck a nd fm if you have any more questions

Re: Prenatals?
i went to my dr. in august and told her we were going to TTC in november she suggested i start taking them 3 months prior to TTC
she recommended Rainbow Light they are more $$ than a prescription because its more than a co pay but she said they were the best

every doctor is completely different.
mine did not want me on prescription prenatals until i got my BFP so i took OTC. he said there was no point. i got my prescription filled for the first time this week (i'm 14 weeks) because i used samples from the doctor for the first 3 months
a prenatal is a prenatal. the folic acid is what counts. the samples i had been taken weren't covered by my insurance so i found out what WAS covered and my doctor wrote me a prescription. he even said the brand makes no difference
my point is, ask your doctor what HE wants you to do based on your history. OTCs are fine while TTC for most doctors
good luck with your TTC journey!

Re: Prenatals?
I started taking them last month. I agree with the above poster.... folic acid is crutial.
however, there's mounting medical evidence that DHA is equally crutial for brain development. Most experts say you need between 200-400 mg a day. So, I'm taking target OTC prenatals AND Expecta DHA. (Expecta you can buy online from drugstore.com. It's the same DHA they put in infant formula, but in pill form.)
Expecta is also great becuase it is derived from algae, not fish, so there's no worry about heavy metals or other hazardous contaminents you may find in fish oil capsules.

Re: Prenatals?
My doctor recommended that I take regular vitamins with folic acid when I was TTC. Then he put me on prenatals when I to my BFP. He left it up to me though. He said that I could start prenatals when I was TTC and just to get the over the counter ones for the time being.
