Hypospadias surgery

My son was born with Hypospadias (its when the pee hole is below where it should be) Its a mild case but we have to get it fixed and get in circumsized at the same time. They just called me to set up the surgery time etc. I'm so scared. I know its a fairly common procedure but it ***** that he has to be under for 3 1/2 hours and then have a cathader. Has anyone else gone through something like this..how did you cope..it just *****!!!

Re: Hypospadias surgery

My nephew had this done years ago (he is 15 now) and had no problem. The surgery & recovery was fine! Good luck - I'm sure all will go well.

I don't know anyone personally that went through it.

As much as these things are routine surgeries, nothing is routine when it is your child.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Hypospadias surgery

my ds has the same condition and he is 2 months old. today i'm calling the urologist our ped recommended to set up an appt. it's only a mild case, my dh and i didn't even notice it. it's just slightly off center and not really causing much of a problem. if it's just for aesthetic reasons we probably won't want surgery, since it's not interfering with his urinating. how do they determine if surgery is needed and how old is your ds?

Well he said it was for aesthetic reason as well as functionality later in life..We saw Dr. Palmer, hes the head of Pediatric urology at Schniders and Huntington. He told us that as the penis grows he will most likely only be able to pee down, also it might affect his erection (might). He said it was mild but its best to get it done now rather then wait until he is older. He will be 7 months when the surgery is done (they have no long term memory so he won't remember it). Its also cosmetic and DH and I figured that we wanted him to be as "normal" as possible and that if anything would happen as he gets older it would be worse to do the surgery then. Do you know what dr. you will be seeing?

I can totally understand where you're coming from! Josh had an undecsended testicle that they had to 1) Locate it 2) Try and bring it down 3) Reattach the blood vessels so that it will remain viable. It was about three hours of surgery under anesthesia. Out of everything that we went through one thing I learned was that the stress of it will kill you and DH but your DC will be fine and never even know what happened. Chat Icon

Re: Hypospadias surgery

I'm seeing dr. palmer also at marcus ave.. i just got off the phone and made an appt for jan 17 for the initial visit...i was really hoping it wouldn't lead to surgery. I was just on their website and the list of pre and post op surgery instructions got me nervous considering ds is so young! Hope all goes well and keep me informed

Re: Hypospadias surgery

Hello All - I know this is an old post but figured why not try to get some responses.

I am besides myself... Yesterday, i was told that our son (its a son from amnio report) hasnt developed a penis... then today, i was told he has Hypospadias and the penis is bent & curved upward. Now, i see alot of these posts were mild cases so I guess the penis was always spotted on sono, and at 20 weeks our sons cannot be seen unless there is a 3d sliced sono b/c of his upward bend.
I am seeing dr palmer tomorrow w/ my sono images so fingers crossed that all goes well. If u or anyone u know has been or is in a similiar situation please please please help me she some light on this. Thank you
