How Green Are You? Share Your Tips too!

I've always been environmentally conscious but after watchin the Inconvenient Truth I feel even more compelled to do my part.

Not to sound like a tree hugger, but I think we should all do our share of taking care of the planet so our children and grandchildren still have a habitable home planet when we're gone.

Top things I do:
1. Use dimmer/motion sensors and replace lightbulbs with energy saving ones

2. Bring own grocery bags instead of using store's plastic ones

3. Recycle everything possible!

4. Reduce consumption of packaged/processed goods

5. Don't drive!

Share your tips!

water the lawn only 1 in. a week during the summer, and mow it high
resuable bags at the supermarket

as many flourescent compact bulbs DH will allow me

carpool with DH to train a few days a week (and take the train to work!)

putting up insulation in our house where ever possible, including around pipes

turn off computer and at home when not in use

I hear ya....I try to do as much as we can:

I bought recycle bins for our office paper....there's sooo much waste here !!

I don't run the water while doing dishes or brushing my teeth.

I always turn unused lights out and unplug appliances when they aren't in use.

I take public transportation....but mainly because I can't afford a car.

At home we have all new energy efficient appliances and light bulbs and new insulation.

And we Recycle as much as we can.

well, I shop at fairway, so there are lots of options...

but here's a little known fact:

marcal is always 100% recycled paper! It's also inexpensive, and leaves virtually no lint when you're windexing your mirrors Chat Icon

yay for afforadable AND green Chat Icon

oh, I forgot in my original post, of course I use the compact fluorescent bulbs too .... OH, and I almost forgot! I'm also slowly transitioning into eco-friendly cleaners Chat Icon (another fairway find)

I agree Chat Icon

Things I do:

- Drive small cars (not great mileage, but decent, considering their age)

- Use reusable bags at grocery and other stores most of the time. Reuse plastic bags when we get them.

- Buy recycled and/or non-chlorine bleached paper goods.

- Have some electronics pluged into an outlet with a switch, turn of the switch when we're not using them.

- CFL bulbs in nearly every lamp.

- Run most errands on foot.

- Carpool to work.

- Recycle paper, plastic and glass.

- Buying organic foods.

- Buying cleaning products that are biodegradable and are least harmful to the environment as I can find.

Re: How Green Are You? Share Your Tips too!

My friends have called me a tree hugger for years and I'm proud...LOL

My DH was an environmental studies major and we both think it's really important to do what you can. Whether or not you believe in global warming, it's smart to take care of our planet.

-Use Compact Flourescent Bulbs

-Use Reusable Grocery Bags

-Both Drive Compact Cars

-Use reusable water containers and use a Brita Pitcher to limit using bottled water

-Lunches packed in reusable tupperware

-Use eco friendly cleaning products whenever possible, we use both Shaklee and Seventh Generation Brands

-Use recycled paper goods whenever possible

-RECYCLE

-And we are planning of switching over to organic over the next few weeks

Re: How Green Are You? Share Your Tips too!

YES! I completely forgot about the bottled water thing... that's possibly the most un-ecofriendly product... and the most easily replaced by a brita pitcher

Love ours... we have the large rectangular one with the spiggot in our frige... Chat Icon

Re: How Green Are You? Share Your Tips too!

We:
use flourescent bulbs in the house
recycle everything we can
only use non-chemical cleaners in the house
drink tap water from a brita filter (no plastic water bottles)
take the train or carpool as often as possible
don't bag grass clipping, mulch them back into the lawn
save used coffee, food scraps, etc. for the garden as mulch
use the reusable grocery bags at the grocery store - and what little plastic we may use we save to do the cat's litter box.
I can't think of anything else right now....

Recycle
I make my own cleaners
Use a reusable water bottle and travel coffee mug
Bring my own grocery bags
Use those special bulbs
Drive a small car and do errands on my way home from work
Buy less in general
Donate anything in good shape instead of tossing it.

recycle everything possible
use canvas bags at the grocery store
energy efficient bulbs
donate things we dont need or want
use paper towels until every inch is soaked with dirt (I dont use one towel to clean the counter, if part of it is still dry/clean I keep that part to use elsewhere)
reuse water bottle containers and always use tupperware

I am sure there is more - I do as much as I possibly can. I live in an apt.
