Are fireplace fumes dangerous for babies?
MIL is relentless. SInce she hates fireplaces, she is driving us nuts about the one in our new home. She says she's been doing research they are bad for infants. I am asthmatic, so I want to do as much as possible to keep DS breathing well. Could she be right?
TIA!!!

Is your MIL my father? My parents have a fireplace and he says he is "allergic" to it. They never use it. Now you know I do not tend to dismiss allergies but the fireplace? But I think it is possible that they aren't safe for babies. It's a fair question for your ped. If you do use it, I would say not to use it every day.

I would think yes because of the soot but I would just ask the pediatrician. I think if you don't use it often and the ventilation is good, then you're fine!

We had our fireplace/chimney cleaned last year. What we did not know..... you are supposed to leave it "open" for 24 hours due to fumes. So yes, it's not "safe" even for adults. You just need good ventilation. I would not stop using it though.
