Help - anyone good with computers?
We've had this problem for a few weeks now: we intermittedly lose our internet connection. When I unplug the power to our wireless router and plug it in again it works. Sometimes this happens every few minutes. Somestimes it's fine all day. We bought a new router and DH has to install it this weekend. Just thought I'd ask the experts on here if they have any insight.
TIA.

It could be caused by the internet provider. We had the same problem when we had cable modem and we had to reset the router / modem whenever it happened. If it isn't from the provider, it could just be a problem with the router. I think you are on the right track.

Re: Help - anyone good with computers?
It's a Linksys router wrt54g v.5. Our provider is Comcast (we live in IL.) We called them and they said our signal was good. We also recently switched to the cable phone. not sure if that matters.

Yes, the main one I use is wired. DH's laptop has not been able to connect at all during these problems. So this router is bad? It has a high rate of problems?
Thanks for helping!

oh, i forgot a word...this is one of the best routers....
when you are wired...do you notice any drop of connection...
on the laptop, is the wiresless built in or an external card? I've had problems with external cards loseing connectivity. Once i got a new laptop which is internal, it worked 100x better.

Re: Help - anyone good with computers?
the drop in connection is always on the wired - desktop computer. the laptop i believe has an internal connection.

Re: Help - anyone good with computers?
Too ways you can approach this, 1 prehaps the router is bad (swap for a new one)
or 2, when the internet goes out, look at the modem to see if DL and UL lights are both flashing..
or 3, plug directly into modem and see if conection drops...
did you try updateing the software on the router...its called firmware and its easy to update...

No, we'll try that tomorrow. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. I'll let you know what happens. We did buy the new router, but I'll try your other suggestions before we use it.
