How safe / unsafe is Jamaica, QUEENS?

ETS: Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful replies!! I really appreciate it. I think I'm going to skip this job because of the neighborhood and the hours. THanks for all of your help in deciding!
-----------------------------------------------

I'm thinking of applying for a job in Jamaica, Queens that would involve working nights (at a substance abuse facility).

How safe or unsafe do you think it would be if I were walking to/from the train? (or parking on the street somewhere, then walking?)

I need a new job desperately, but not enough to jeopardize my safety. Anyone know how the area is currently?

TIA!

ETA: It's on Jamaica Ave, West of Sutphin Blvd, at 144th St. (South of Hillside Ave, North of Atlantic Ave.)

well I can tell you its not the safest area (my Dad used to work near there), but that being said, how close is it to the LIRR?

Personally I dont think it is the best area. During the day I wouldnt be worried about walking. But if you have a far distance to walk to the train at night by yourself Im not sure thats a great idea.

i work there
i am here right now actually

i feel safe during the day. i have armed guards in my building and then i cross one street and go into a parking garage with guards

The latest I leave here is 6PM though so I can't really tell you about the night time. I *do* know it is getting better and they are supposed to be developing it.

FM if you have any questions!

If it is South Jamaica, I would never set foot there without protection. North Jamaica, by the LIRR, is not too bad. I used to go there pretty often during the day without any issues. That part borders on Jamaica Estates which is a beautiful and wealthy part of town. It is also safe by St John's...excluding the incident.

I'm in Jamaica fairly often, and have never felt uncomfortable, but its always daytime and I'm in and out of houses.

I wouldn't be as comfortable at night, alone, walking the streets around a substance abuse facility. Perhaps the facility has an "escort" program in place, or a buddy system for walking to the train together?

this is probably the most accurate description.

but I would say that ANY SA facility at night would make me wary of my surroundings...even if it was Promises in Malibu.

an addict is an addict is an addict.

I'd take a spin by the area, see how well lit the streets are on the walk to the train..get a feel for it.

even Park Slope has it's streets I wouldn't walk down at night, and that is a "nice" neighborhood.

Hi Everyone-
Thank you SO much for your responses! I really appreciate them.

The exact location is:

Jamaica Ave, at 144th St.

That's West of Sutphin Blvd, East of the Van Wyck/Qns Blvd,

South of Hillside Ave, North of Atlantic Ave.)

Not knowing anything about the area, does that make it North or South Jamaica?

M DH is a cop in Jamaica, he says not to get off the train there at night and he means it! I don't mean to scare you, but wanted to give you an honest answer.

that area is not QUITE all the way in south jamaica--kind of middle of the way from south to north. my DH is a cop in south jamaica and i wouldn't want him there at nite (he works days mostly)

i would say that it is not exactly the safest of areas to be a woman, walking alone at nite...but its not the worse possible area. i would greatly consider the distance between the job and the train station.

ETA: i just read that its a substance abuse facility--um...honestly i would be very very very cautious of taking a job in that area in a facility that attracts junkies.

That's pretty close to Jamaica Hospital. I was there frequently with my brother. I never felt unsafe. Lots of people do though.

That's a crime-ridden part of town. You'd be taking a risk walking around there at night by yourself.

Why do you assume addicts would be hanging around outside the facility?

Is it an in-patient thing? If so, I wouldn't be worried about the addicts hanging out on the street near the place.

I'm not sure how I'd feel walking alone from Jamaica train station in the surrounding areas at night, though, b/c I never have. How far do you have to go?

RE: the fact that it's a substance abuse facility... First, why do we assume it attacts junkies. It could be an alcohol center - it could be an in patient center.

Generally, junkies looking to mug people or score drugs aren't hanging around the rehabs.

that reminds me of an old George Carlin skit Chat Icon

"Everybody wants more prisons. Everybody says "BUILD MORE PRISONS!....but not here."

But why? What's wrong? What's wrong with having a prison in your neighborhood? It would seem to me that it would make it a pretty crime free area don't you think? You think a lot of crackheads, pimps, hookers and thieves are going to be hanging around in front of a prison? Bullcrap, they aren't coming anywhere near it! What's wrong with these people, all the criminals are locked up behind the walls and if a couple of them do get out what do you think they are going to do, hang around? Check real estate trends? They're freaking gone! That's the whole point of breaking out of prison to get as far away as they possibly can!"

I agree, and I'm an intern at a substance abuse facility. I have never once felt uncomfortable or not safe.
