Also probably because Europeans don't classify themselves as European but rather the country they are from...

Do Latin Americans classify themselves as Latin or from their particular country?

Cause if they classify themselves as Latin american than Latina would be correct

A lot of Jews also consider Jewish a heritage because, beyond a religion, the traditions pervade into so many parts of your life- the way you eat, etc... Also- Jews have maintained their traditions regardless of what country they lived in. Sure there are some variations amongst the Jews from Europe and the Jews from the Middle East- but overall- no matter what country we lived in- our traditions were the same.

Also- in most countries- Jews did not integrate with the general population- so we maintained our separate identity from the rest of the country. My father was born in Russia and my mother was born in Poland- but my grandparents did not deal with the non-Jewish population in either country. They were not considered "Russian" by the Russians or "Polish" by the Poles since they were Jewish. In fact, neither of my parents were considered citizens of the countries they were born in. (that also may be because of the war). Both my parents were raised in Israel and here.

Excellant way of explaining.

I had to do a family report for a sociology class in college and have found that a lot of Jewish people dont have information about them becaus their grandparents and great grandparents left the countries they came from because of religious persucutions and WWII. The ones that came to America were forced to leave everything behind and change their names adapting to a new lifestyle however continued with their beliefs and traditions.

My fathers paternal grandparents came from Russia who are jewish and when they came to the US a lot of information was lost because they even had to change their names. The same was with maternal grandparents however they came from Poland. My dad had a great uncle that was born in Argentina on the way to america.

My mother who is italian and raised catholic raised me to be catholic however to honor my fathers beliefs, religion and traditions I also observed and followed the jewish beliefs and traditions. I went to Temple with my dad on the holidays, had passover dinners at family's homes, even tried fasting one year but that didnt last very long. I always had a christmas tree and manorah in my home growing up and now in my own home I have a mazzuzah by my door and a manorah for channuka.

When my bubbie passed away she left me her passover crystal as well as her good china. One day when I have a china cabinet it's all going in there.

Yes it is...but it is not a nationality
heritage...i guess

but most people who are jewish will answer it for both. And i don't get that...Yest it is part of their culture and IS their religion but that is it imo

Well- when a group of people have been kicked out of nearly every country they settle in- I guess we start to lose a little faith in nationality. The jews were persecuted and kicked out (or killed) of Spain during the Spanish Inquisition, Poland, Russia, German in the 30's-40's. , the French handed their Jews over to the Nazis and most were killed. Iran in the revolution of 1979 when the Shah was overthrown, Iraq in the 1950's when the took away the Jewish right to own property and possessions and gave them 48 hours to leave Iraq or they would be hung, Morocco during the revolution in the 70's, etc... etc...

My grandparents are survivors of the holocaust- they were never considered Polish or Russian - so they never considered themselves Polish or Russian. When asked their nationality- Jewish was the closest thing they had. My father was born in a Sybirian labor camp during the war- I don't think the Russians considered him Russian- and he certainly didn't consider himself Russian.

Just something to think about...

I understand it completely.
My grandmother is jewish and she talks to us about it all the time
The above is well understood...
But it is a religion

Re: what is your nationality(heritage)

I think the confusion is being cause because the original question of the post was "nationality(heritage)". But those are two different things.

I was born and raised here, so technically my nationality is American.

But both my parents were born and raised in Dominican Republic, so that makes my heritage Dominican. There is some Irish in my lineage somewhere too and I never know whether or not to count that!
