chord blood
Did you bank chord blod, i cant seem to find much infor other than advertismeents....what exactly can it do in the future. how much was it? im so confused and we have to decide....

I banked cord blood - with Via Cord...They have a few different payment plans. They aren't the cheapest, but they do research and development as well as storage.
ETA - ViaCord -- ViaCell is actually the R&D branch.
They were just sold to PerkinElmer anyway so things may be changing...

We did we used Viacord, it was about $1,800 for the banking and it will be $125 for the annual storage fee.
Also our insurance does not cover my OBGyn fee to bank the blood.
We felt it was a small price to pay incase god forbid int eh futre DS needs it.

My doctor (who is the liason for the blood bank and the hospital) told me that unless you have a family history of the ailments that can be helped by the cord blood, it is not worth it to bank it. Chances are if God forbid you actually need it, you would not be able to use your child's cord blood anyway.
He suggested donation. You can check with your doctor or the hosptial where you will be delivering for more information. (If I can find the information that I was given I will post it). But here is some info that I found on my own:

Viacord's main focus is on research. That's why we went with them as well.
I think the fee for the OB to bank the blood was $250-300 or so... not covered by insurance.
My doc explained that each child cannot use their own chordblood but a child can use a siblings chordblood.

There are very few applications right now, but research will continue to find new ones I expect. There are also public banks if you are in need, so don't think this is the only way if something happened.
If you've got money to spare, its another insurance policy. If money is tight, save the $2000 for diapers and formula!

Except that we don't know what uses may be found in the FUTURE. So if you bank, you have the option of using your own child's OR getting from a bank if what you have isn't suitable.
My niece is getting her PhD in Biomedical Engineering and I think the advances are going to be immense and swift and in that case, I want to have it banked just in case for future developments.

Wait what do you mean a child cannot use their own chord blood??
That is exactly what its for, the child is his own 100% match. and his siblings may also be able ot use it.

It isn't always useful in every case. It may carry the same cells that are causing the problem and therefore cannot be used (i.e., leukemia) BUT a sibling's cord blood might be useful. This is only the case for certain issues.

There is a good chance we are only having 1 child. Combine this with no history on either side of the family of such aliments - and we decided that we are not banking.

I think that these are all valid points, but I guess in our case we are lucky enough that money is not a problem, so we felt that it was worth it even if its all speculative rigth now. We will also do it for any other children we have in the future.
