Al Gore & the UN team won the Nobel Peace Prize

Which made DH and I laugh b/c yesterday Bloomberg had a story about how a UK court ruled that there are so many scientific inaccuracies in "An Inconvenient Truth" that British students have to receive notes to read along with it in order to prevent "political indoctrination"

Al Gore's `Alarmist' Climate Film Has Errors, U.K. Judge Rules
2007-10-11 08:05 (New York)

By Caroline Byrne
Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore's global warming film has so many scientific errors students must see it with guidance notes to prevent political indoctrination, a London judge ruled.

``An Inconvenient Truth'' has nine main errors with some arising in the context of ``alarmism and exaggeration,'' Judge Michael Burton ruled at the High Court of London yesterday. The Academy-Award winning documentary made Gore a contender for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

In one scene, Hurricane Katrina and the devastation in New Orleans is linked to global warming with insufficient evidence, Burton said. There is also a discussion in Gore's film about devastation and rising sea levels if Greenland were to break up and melt.

``The Armageddon scenario he predicts, insofar as it suggests that sea level rises of 7 meters might occur in the immediate future, is not in line with scientific conclusions,'' Burton said.

While the film has already been distributed to all British secondary schools by the U.K. government, father-of-two Stuart Dimmock asked the court to declare the distribution unlawful because the film is politically biased.

Burton ruled that bias could be addressed by teachers using guidance notes to lead follow-up discussions including alternative views to those in the documentary.

Gore, 59, and Canadian activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier are the most likely candidates to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize for campaigning about the threat of climate change, Stein Toennesson, director of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo, said today.

Re: Al Gore & the UN team won the Nobel Peace Prize

I don't think we'll ever know for sure who is right and who is wrong, with all the scientists and studies, differing opinions, people who have a vested interest in one assumption or the other.

What I do know is that what Gore did raised awareness on environmental issues and prompted millions of people to THINK about what they are doing.

And that is what I'm happy for. Chat Icon

I was thinking the same exact thing. For me it wasn't as much about accuracy as it is making people aware of how much damage we are doing to this Earth.

eta. and that fact is indisputable.Chat Icon

I agree that raising awareness is great, just think it's funny that a British court is essentially accusing him of brainwashing. He can't seem to do or say anything without it turning into a controversy.

Re: Al Gore & the UN team won the Nobel Peace Prize

personally, i think it is obvious to most that there is a climate crisis on our planet and that it is only getting worse. i think we should all do little things to try to help.

i have a hard time with the whole bush has a more environmentally friendly home than al gore. it can be true, but as far as i am aware, gore has stated repeatedly that he is updating his home and is using the same techniques he's asked the american public to use.

also, our president has done basically nothing to help take care of our planet over the past 7 years. and in my opinion has only made things worse, he didn't sign the kyoto treaty which would help greatly helped the entire world fight this issue and he hasn't helped us steer away from relying on foreign oil.

it's unfortunate at times that al gore is the leader for the alliance for climate crisis because he is still slammed for his past, but i have a lot of respect for the work he's doing now and i'd like to see some change for our planet

sorry this is long, i'm just very passionate about this issue!!

as soon as Americans trade in their gas guzzling SUV's for smart cars, maybe someone would actually believe we care.

we consume a REDICULOUS amount of energy and yet complain about Kyoto Chat Icon

I respect Gore and applaud his efforts, but this seems premature. Most past Peace Prize laureates have spent decades doing grassroots policy work that eventually affected major change -- peace in East Timor and Northern Ireland, amnesty for refugees, ending apartheid, etc.

I guess "raising awareness" doesn't seem Nobel-worthy to me. Especially since so many people are AWARE of the threat of global warming but aren't actually DOING much to reduce their own contributions to the problem.

Re: Al Gore & the UN team won the Nobel Peace Prize

When it comes to this issue, I'm constantly trying to seperate facts from opinion.

If we don't do research to form the opinions we have, then what are they based on? Other people's opinions. And that's no foundation for a belief.

So when I hear positive or negative things about Gore, I look into them. It's very hard to find sources that aren't tipped to one side or another but if you read enough from both sides, you can form your own opinion.

The problem comes in (from my point of view) when you WANT to believe something and only listen to sources that support your need. Whether it's true or not.

Re: Al Gore & the UN team won the Nobel Peace Prize

When it comes to environmental issues, there is always a line that gets drawn. Everyone deals with this in their own comfort zone. Some will buy CFL's for their house but still drive a large SUV. Some will go for a hybrid but leave the lights on when they're not home.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't expect Al Gore to not have a line himself. Where does it become enough, his leading by example? How much does the good he's doing cancel out the bad?

Does traveling to other countries by plane make the impact he has with his global warming presentation useless?

If he had renewable fuel to heat his house, does that make it ok for him to have more than one home?

And who's the judge and jury on this? The media? They loooooove to exploit any negative thing that they can find in someone who is trying to do good.

I don't expect Gore to be perfect. But he's doing a heck of a lot more than a lot of other people who have as much money or property as he does. Except maybe Ed Begley Jr. but he's a freak. Chat Icon
