Percentile question

My DD is in the 55th % for weight and height. What exactly does that mean? The way the nurse explained was that 55% of babies her age are at that weight and height. But, my SIL said something completely different. So confused.

Re: Percentile question

I always knew it to mean...

If they are at X% then 100-X% babies are taller or weigh more than their height and weight.

For example, if my DS is 25% for weight but 50% for height then 75% of all babies his age weight more than him and 50% of all babies are taller than him.

Re: Percentile question

I always thought it meant that if a baby was 75th percentile for height, for example, then that baby was taller than 75% of the other babies his age.

That's how my ped explained. My DD is in the 98th % for height and he said that means she's taller than 98% of babies in her age group.

Re: Percentile question

Those were the two different answers I got also. One of them was given by my pediatrician. The other explanation by my SIL's ped. Go figureChat Icon

Re: Percentile question

They're actually saying the same thing. One is saying that if your baby is in the 25th percentile that 75% of babies are bigger, which means that your baby is bigger than 25% of other babies. It's just looking at it from different perspectives, but it is the same information.

That is what I was going to say, really those are the same answers, just different ways to phrase it.

My DS is 10th percentile for weight, which means 90% of babies his age are bigger than him.
