Parents of premature infants question?

Was your premature child placed on a different vaccination schedule as a result of the fact that he/she was premature. DS was 5 1/2 weeks early, but the doctor has her on the same schedule as a term baby. I recently started to question this choice.

My friend had her DS 6 weeks early and he got shots at the same time my DS got them (full term).

We're on the regular vaccination schedule. Although DSs were 6 weeks early, the progressed beautifully the first year and showed no issues relating to their prematurity.

DD was born at 33 weeks (7 weeks early), but has been on the same schedule as everyone else and has had no issues. She just turned one.

My DD was 5 1/2 weeks early and her shot were on schedule as a full-term baby. She was still classified a premie because of her lung development. The only difference the pediatrician said was that she would probably do her other milestones a little later.

She's 17 months now and met every milestone early. So they catch up quickly. She started walking at 10 months.

Re: Parents of premature infants question?

My first son was born 6 weeks early. At his 2 month visit my ped. (who is a really good friend of ours) said we should vaccinate on schedule. Every instinct i had said to wait 6 weeks, he was still so small, etc., but being a 1st time mom, I didnt recognize "mommy instincts" and followed the ped.'s advice. Well, my little guy spiked a 103 degree fever for over 36 hours, had to get a catheter, I refused a spinal tap, and it was a nightmare. It's my biggest regret with him. I'd say follow your instincts.

My son was only 6 weeks premature with little, if any, complications. Same vaccination schedule as the full-terms only I opted for my own schedule & delayed them.

He didn't qualify to get the RSV shot (many preemies do).

I delayed the first round for 6 months months. After that, if there was a hint of illness, I would forgo the shot & get it at the next visit.

He's 6 now & completely caught up.

So basically he didn't get his first round of shots until he was 6 months of age??

Just wondering b/c my daughter is in the 25th percentile for weight. She was born 5 1/2 weeks early. I'm concerned about her getting shots she's not ready for..

Correct. My son was 6lb 7oz - a good weight, also born in Sept.

You need to do what you're comfortable with. The fact is I don't think anyone of us is comfortable injecting a foreign substance into our children. I haven't come across a friend/mom who wasn't concerned after every shot. You do it because history & medical research indicates its the way to go. You do it & then you pray like the rest of us.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Parents of premature infants question?

Emma was born 4 weeks 1 day early. I got her 2 month shots on time and her 4 months at 5 months, so she will be a month delayed going forward now.

Re: Parents of premature infants question?

Yes my sons were born 6 weeks early.
My smaller son was only 4lbs 8oz so the hospital said to hold off on the hepatitus vaccine due to his size.. SOOOO my pediatrician said they will be on a regular schedule for vaccines and do not need the hepatitus at this time as it is included in another shot at 4 months i believe... GOOD LUCK!
