After you closed...hidden expenses..

After you closed & were in your house, what were some hidden expenses you didn't expect?

Ie., water filters, smoke alarms, etc.

Thx.

we bought at the beginning of the summer and it would be $$$ to buy all the outdoor tools, but we scoured garage sales and got very lucky

Re: After you closed...hidden expenses..

We haven't closed but one thing I thought of was one of those bars for the sliding glass door, to prevent it from being opened from inside or outside. Just for added security.

We'll also need lots of lights and light fixtures too.

Reconnection of our power line to the house. We also decided to upgrade our amps at the same time. This was $$$!

Re: After you closed...hidden expenses..

New locks for all doors leading from the house to the outside.

We moved in the winter and the first ice/winter storm we had in Feb caused water leakage into the basement, so we had to DIY with repairs.

The leaves that were stuck in the gutters from the fall caused a build up and the ice froze it and bent the gutters in half and forced them off the house, so we had to get that repaired. (Lesson - clean the gutters when you move in, no matter how cold it is!)

Um, can't think of much else.

Oh, blinds for all the windows

Lightbulbs in an assortment as each room had different requirements.

Re: After you closed...hidden expenses..

Door locks - they were more expensive than I thought they would be
Light switches, Outlets & Covers - we didn't think about this one until we painted all of the rooms and the old BLACK light switches and outlets stood out. We had to change them all.
Kitchen floor
Door knobs
Rakes
Garbage cans
Cleaning supplies
We also ended up steam cleaning all of the carpets just so I could feel comfortable walking barefoot on them.

Re: After you closed...hidden expenses..

just about everything that was already mentioned, I was also taken back by the cost of heating this big house with oil compared to my small townhouse w/gas heat. Filling the oil tank the first couple of times was horrifying.

Re: After you closed...hidden expenses..

Cin - we haven't moved yet, but thus far we have spent $$$$ on paint & supplies, and having the locks changed (I called a pro).

On my to get/do list:
1. Professional cleaning person
2. Professional steam cleaning of carpets
3. Professional cleaning of air ducts
4. Professional chimney cleaning for fireplace
5. Everything else already mentioned on this thread (especially the window treatments)

And because of our situation, all the everyday household stuff like mop & broom that we don't own. Chat Icon Chat Icon
