if it is your DH's sister, i would say it is good form to invite her to be a bridesmaid

if it is DH's brother's wife - eh - only if you have a great relationship

I agree with this! I was a bridesmaid in my SIL's wedding (DH's sister). We get along great. But if she didn't include me, I wouldn't have been upset.

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

I'm much younger than my brother and sisters (14yrs) so I had all of my nieces in my BP, my sister-in-law and sisters were very involved in my wedding but didn't want to wear BM dresses or walk down the isle in their 40's. When I was little I was in theirs though as a flower girl. Chat Icon
My DH's sister-in-law wasn't in mine either she had just had a baby and we aren't that close so it might have been weird.

I asked one of the three I have, she and I are the closest, I have just now gotten closer to one. The last one, well you would just have to know her.Chat Icon DH asked my brother and didnt care that his sister wasn't in it.

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

I didn't have BMs, so I didn't ask SILs to be in our wedding. If I did have BMs, I am not sure I would have asked them anyway, I think I would have asked my closest friends. For their weddings, one asked me to be in the party, one didn't.

I think there are a lot of factors involved in the decision and the bride shouldn't feel uncomfortable having anyone in the BP (nor should the groom).

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

I think it is the right thing to do, however it is up to the bride.

I had my SILs in my wedding (DH's sister), but wasn't in my one SILs. But I was the wife of her brother.

I asked my SIL- my husband's sister. But I don't think the same holds true for the spouse of the sibling.

Actually- this reminds me. My DH and I got engaged a few days before my sister got married. DH and BIL get along very well, but BIL already had about 10 people in his party. My sister asked me if DH wanted to be a groomsman. DH said that it wasn't necessary. Why would he be a groomsman only because we were engaged?

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

I was a BM for my SIL and she was a BM for me. But we LOVE each other so much, we are like best friends. As for my other bro's wife, there is NO WAY I would ask her. I can't stand her.

I don't think it's rude but then again, I didn't have 2 SILs in my party. 1 SIL was in it.

We included them in the ceremony & wedding but not as part of the bridal party. I barely knew them. My other SIL was more of a sister to me.

I get along well with my SILs but I had no intention of asking them to be BMs and I think they were totally fine with it.

I think it's truly up to the bride. If you're not close with your FSIL why have her as a BM?

same here!

i have 3 SILs, 2 of them had twins right before my wedding (one set in november, one set in january, wedding was in february)... i get along well with them, but had no intention of asking any of them to be in the bridal party, and i think they were probably all relieved about it, to be honest.

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

i voted its up to the bride. my dh has no sisters so it was not an issue. but my sister had her sil in the bp and the 2 of them do not get along. well. they do, but they are not bff.

i don't think its always automatic that a sibling is in the bp.

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

I had 2 sister-in-laws in my bridal party. My brothers wife was my MOH, I have known her since I was a little girl and she truly is like an older sister. My DH sister was a BM and we became close friends when my DH and I were engaged. So for me, it was completely natural to ask the 2 of them and I am happy I did!

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

DH's sister - yes
DH's SIL - no

My BIL is getting married in a few weeks. Al's the best man, but I'm not in the wedding nor did I expect to be.

I had both of Al's sister's as BMs.

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

I did not ask DH's sister to be a BM. She lives in Buffalo and we see them maybe once a year. She did do a reading at the wedding though, and her daughter was our flowergirl.

Re: Sister-in-laws and bridesmaids

SIL and I have always had a strained relationship...she owes me a lot of money...has lied a lot, but I still asked her to be in the BP.

What's right is right..it's her brother's wedding afterall. She has as much right to be in the BP as my sisters do.
