I have been reading all of these posts about grammar and it's correct usage, and for the most part, have disagreed. I am a former teacher and I am usually just as much of a stickler as everyone else about the usage of correct grammar. However, in posts on a message board, it doesn't really bother me at all.
However...incorrect pronunciation while having a face-to-face conversation with another adult absolutely KILLS me!!! "FUstrated" is a BIG one with me. Same for "ValentiMes's Day."

you're right - i should have clarified. for the most part, this stuff bothers me when speaking to people in person, not when i read posts. i have made my share of spelling mistakes (too lazy to spell check). i will, however, stop reading a post if there are so many spelling errors it doesn't make any sense.

This is my #1 pet peeve. I have a friend that says it all the time, and I've been biting my tongue for years.

None of this bothers me at all- in person or on message boards. I know what the person is trying to say, so I never really focus on how they say or spell their words. I am the most guilty of everyone here!

What if you went on accident? Would they liberryan get all fustrated with you?
you are just as much trouble as everyone says you are.

and "axed" instead of "asked"
That's interesting b/c in Middle English 'axen' and 'asken' (Note on -en endings: -en endings were used in Middle English and -an endings in Old English. -en endings can still be found in German and -an endings in Gothic German which is a dead language). In Old English the word was both 'scian' and 'csian'. As you can see they are similar. I could get into consonant shifts of the language, but I won't.
In fact Chaucer used both axen and asken in 'Canterbury Tales' to mean 'to ask'.
Example:
'I wol aske, if it hir will be/To be my wyf' and 'Men axed hym, what sholde bifalle,'
The first sentence with ask means 'I wanted to ask' and the second 'I asked' (I think, at least in German it would mean that).
Anyway I am going to take the rest from Wikitionary, b/c they explain it best:
"The forms in "x" arose from the forms in "sk" by a linguistic process called metathesis, in which two sounds are reversed. The "x" thus represents /ks/, the flipped version of /sk/. Metathesis is a common linguistic process around the world and does not arise from a defect in speaking. Nevertheless, "ax" has become stigmatized as substandard - a fate that has befallen other words, like "ain't", that were once perfectly acceptable in literate circles."
I just find it interesting how language has changed so much... axed and asked is a good example of this, IMO. But someone can argue that someone pronounced it wrong once and now it is slang, blah blah. Still interesting b/c it once existed.
