2nd baby showers

what is the deal with these? Is it common these days?? Do you register for them?

Am I the only one that thinks it's weird?

Re: 2nd baby showers

I would say if you're having the same sex, then no. But maybe if you're having the opposite sex, you could have a small shower...or a sprinkle for little items.

Re: 2nd baby showers

I didn't have one, not even a sprinkle or brunch.
But I also think it depends on how far apart kids are and if they are same sex or not.

I have 2 girls close together, so NO for me, but my cousin in law who's due in a month just had a 2nd shower, registered and everything for 2nd boy, her 1st one isn't even 2 yet.

I think it would depend on how far apart they are the kids are. You kinda have everything already with #2.

I know I wouldn't feel wierd having a shower for #2 if my kids were at least 4-5 years apart whether i knew the sex or not.

Chat Icon

ETA: and that 2nd shower would need to be small with just close family/friendsChat Icon all other instances, way too wierd for me

I didn't have one but my kids are 14.5 months apart and I had the opposite sex the second time around. I didn't even register because I didn't see the point really. I had registered for gender nuetral stuff the first time for the big items even though I knew I was having a boy. I only really needed a double stroller and clothing and bedding. The bedding my MIL bought for us so their was nothing to register for.

When the time comes for you I dont think their is anything wrong with having one.

I think there's nothing wrong in having a 2nd shower, I wouldn't have it as big as my first, but something smaller with a few friends and family is fine! I'm not sure if I would register again though......

We always have them amongst my friends but they're on a much smaller scale. No one registers for them. Typically it's the playgroup moms, no family or friend outside that group.

I agree. Every baby deserves to be celebrated and have their "own" shower. I'm sure I won't be having one or a sprinkle but I do think they are a nice idea for the new baby and the mom.

My 2 are 17 months apart... My closest friends gave me a sprinkle even though I was having another girl. I didn't register... I didn't even know I was having one.
If I was invited to one and I wasn't great friends with the person, I might think it was weird too.

I get what you are saying. To play devils advocate....isn't that what you do after the baby is born? When you go to visit don't you bring a gift since the parents should really have all the essentials from the first child?

eta: I am jewish and traditionaly jewish girls dont have a shower at all - so my questions are from a point of not really understanding - not to be judgemental at all.

Some of the gifts were for me and for my older DD so she didn't feel left out... my girlfriends also brought clothes or dolls when they came to visit when DD #2 was born.

It was unexpected and generous of my friends.

Re: 2nd baby showers

Personally, I wouldn't want a second shower, but I know myself, if my sister ever has a second baby, I would definitely want to have a small sprinkle for her because that's just what I'd want to do for her.

Re: 2nd baby showers

I didn't have a formal shower or register. During one of my visits home to NY, my mom got some family and friends over at the house for a get together.

I didn't want one bc I felt like family/friends would be sooooo sick of us. We had so many major life events in the last 3yrs - my MBA grad, bridal shower, wedding, baby shower, baptism and DH grad from law school.

I don't agree with 2nd baby showers. And, I definately don't agree with THIRD baby showers, like my friend had.

If I have a girl next, i would maybe have my mom have a lunch at her house with family and closes friends only...And I wouldn't register.
For another boy I would not want to have anything.

Re: 2nd baby showers

I think a luncheon or a celebration is a little different. IMO, those are fine. But to register for all of the baby items again is going too far. I mean, some people register for car seats and cribs and big ticket items. I think that's wrong to expect people to buy that for you again. BUT, to each's own.

I agree. I can understand if the children are far apart, but it's just not a common thing where I am from.

I see what you're saying and I gues that's true to some degree. I guess maybe I think that every pregnancy should be celebrated and the mom to be made to feel special. I really don't think it's all about the gifts; more of a celebration of the woman becoming a mom again.

Re: 2nd baby showers

I'm having a second because for my first, five years ago, I was a single Mom and now I'm married and DH has a big family and this is the first baby. I didn't really keep any big stuff from my first because I thought he would be my only child. I was 33. So I guess it depends on the situation, I don't think I would have another shower if it were not for these circumstances. Although the sprinkle sounds so sute......
