Dinner Time....

At night, while having dinner, do you and your DH sit at the table and eat? My DH insists on sitting in the living room so he can watch TV when it's just us. (baby is in the exersaucer). This drives me nuts because I feel it is messy and I think we should be able to spend time together eating dinner at least.
Also, do you sit at the table and watch tv while eating?

Now that the baby is young I give in mostly but I think we should be eating at the table and her in her highchair.

Soon this will be mandatory in my house.

Your thoughts....

Re: Dinner Time....

We can see the TV from the dinner table and in most cases it's on. But we do eat at the table. When we have children I will insist that we eat with no TV. That's how we did it in my house... FH's house, different story.

Re: Dinner Time....

Most of the time we eat in the kitchen, though if we have a late dinner and there's a show on tv that we want to watch, we'll grab the snack trays and eat in the living room.

This of course would all be avoided if we had a tv in the kitchen.

We eat at the kitchen table every night.

Before the baby - we did have alot of meals in front of the tv - but then again we were having dinner at 8:30-9:00

Re: Dinner Time....

DH and I don't have any children yet so since its just us two, we sit in the living room and eat while we catch up on the billion shows that were DVR'ed from the week. Its a really bad habit but it works for us right now. I would try to maybe eating at the table with the baby a couple of times a week to get used to it if you don't want to do it every single night right now. Would your DH go for that arrangement maybe 2 nights a week to start?

One rule I made when we got married was to eat at the table - not in front of the TV.

On a rare occassion we will eat dinner on the couch - if its something simple and we are watching a movie or something.

It used to be here and there and now its every night. I agree with the late dinners or snacks in front of the tv or if theres something on.. that's fine... but it's become such a bad habit. Now our 8 mo. old is able to sit in the high chair I want her to know that we eat as a family. This is how I was raised... he on the other hand... let's not go there ... Chat Icon

Re: Dinner Time....

DH doesn't get home from work until 9:30ish so I typically eat at the island (which I can see the tv from).

If he is home we still eat at the island but no tv.

We are newly married with no kids yet.

We eat on snack trays in front of the tv. We like it for now b/c we eat late. When we have kids, we will eat at the table with no tv. We've already discussed it and are on the same page. I think it's part of quality family time.

Exactly the same for us.
Once we have kids, that tv will be OFF (and the newspaper will not be read at the table either, sorry DH - enjoy it while you can).

Re: Dinner Time....

When we lived in our apt in the city, we always sat in the living room in front of the tv, unless we had company. When we bough our house 3 1/2 yrs ago we decided to eat in the kitchen like a family, no tv. Occassionally if we get take out or a casual dinner we eat in the living room. But I like that we have dinner time in the kitchen.

We mostly eat at our counter (so we face the kitchen but if we turn around we can see the TV).

Re: Dinner Time....

we eat on the couch watching tv using snack trays right now. after we got married in sept. we tried eating at the kitchen table but it's a small table and the chairs are uncomfortable

we have discussed that in the future when we have kids we want to sit around the table and have dinner with no tv.
