I dont understand...
I dont think its NY or America's problem...How can anyone, anywhere, ever, fully prepare for an act of God or nature? Why blame "NY" or "America" for not being prepared??? It just doesn't make sense to me. No one anywhere wants to be flooded out or trapped anywhere...I just don't understand why people look to place so much blame on something so uncontrollable?? Is it me?

I agree. I think NY is doing what it can by reminding everyone to be aware of what to do in an emergency and have a plan for their family. In fact, I just got a brochure in the mail yesterday.

there are other places/areas that are more prepared for natural disasters than we are.
I by no means intend to imply that I expect any government to be able to control nature, I am referring more to the complete chaos that ensues after.
PEOPLE don't know what to do with themselves, and it's the PEOPLE, not the government, that are unprepared in my opinion. It seems like no one knows what to do...they cannot assemble themsevles to get out of harms way...nothing.
that is what I am talking about...

I held court on the escalator at Penn Station today. i was ranting about how we have the biggest and busiest mass transit system in the nation and it comes to a screetching halt with a rain storm..
...and the escalators don't work!!

Re: So, I am not a "doomsayer" or anything like that but
I also think this is a reflection of the type of society we have become, particularly in the NYC area. The pace here is such that it is unthinkable to call in to work or not be accessible to people 24-7 and I just don't think that helps at all.
One of the last big snowstorms we had involved over 6" of snow on the LIRR tracks. People were complaining about the trains not running. I doubt it is cost effective for the RR to be able to clear that amount of snow in below freezing temps. in a short amount of time. We can be better prepared, but we (and our bosses, workplaces, etc.) can relax and deal better with it too.

hmmmm.....
I do hold our state and gov't laible for providing timely and precautionary measures to the people they protect.....we need to have logical, attainable goals and actions in place when faced with an emergency. There should be some training involved for all emergency workers, not to say there aren't.
With that said, I also think that it is the responsibility of the people to have emergency measures in place as well. We cannot solely rely on the gov't to come and pluck each and every one of us to safety.

Re: So, I am not a "doomsayer" or anything like that but
During the '80s, when everyone was panicking about how to evacuate LI if the Shoreham power plant started leaking, the same discussions came up. Honestly, I don't think I would want a boat for my family. If it got that bad, I am pretty sure I would be attacked by someone else who wanted my boat. People turn into animals when something happens. I would rather take my chances with nature, than against an angry mob with weapons....
I feel much safer here than in earthquake prone CA, 8 foot blizzard prone Wisconsin, tornado prone midwest, hurricane prone Florida, etc, etc.... other areas of the country get major catastrophes on a yearly basis.

Re: So, I am not a "doomsayer" or anything like that but
especially on Long Islan...there is only one way off this Islan, and it would be MASS CHAOS.
DH said we would have a better chance trying to drive to Montauk where our boat is and try to go up north.....

Re: So, I am not a "doomsayer" or anything like that but
but if it's the weather that causes the disaster- how are recreational boaters going to get anywhere? they'll be taken under in no time. They need to build a bridge to the north- at least some other way to get off.

ITA on all counts. I had a friend who lived on Saipan (island in the Pacific) for several years. They had typoons, bad rains, etc. They had specific directions of what to do in each case. I know Hawaii is also very conscious of tsunamis and has great warning systems, etc. You can't predict or prevent an act of nature but you should be equppied to handle a realistic one. NYC and LI are going to be hit by a hurricane one day -- maybe in our lifetime, maybe not-- and plans should be in place for how to handle such an emergency.

Re: So, I am not a "doomsayer" or anything like that but
a boat would be useless unless it was docked in your backyard. how would you get to the marina if the roads were flooded? and how would you travel in a huge storm in a little boat? pointless.
we are all s crewed big time. our infrastructure is a mess and there are TOO MANY PEOPLE ON THIS ISLAND!!! and the more they build, the worse it will be
