Re: Shoes Off??

i hate when people do this. . .i know someone who makes you keep your shoes OUTSIDE the apartment door on the landing. . .i hate that

honestly, if it were my sister or a close friend just coming to hang out maybe i would ask them? but if i were having GUESTS over like my FILs for dinner. . i would NEVER be able to ask them.

I couldn't imagine telling an adult ( older than me) that they HAD to take their shoes off!

I know how you feel about walking all over the place than coming in a walking on the carpets. Which is why I hate carpeting. I can't wait to get rid of it. I always feel no matter how much you vacuum, it's never clean.

But as much as it bothers me, I would not ask anyone to remove their shoes.

I agree.

We used to have off white carpets and we just dealt with the clean up since it was our choice to get them.

Guests are welcome to remove their shoes but I would never ask them to. People that came over asked to remove their wet shoes when there was snow on the ground.

I agree. Just because someone is comfortable going without shoes in their house, doesn't mean I am.

If you have hardwood floors, my feet freeze in the winter, and I can't begin to describe my disgust at going into a bathroom at a party or gathering without shoes. Chat Icon

In our case...the carpets were already here when we moved in and are light and we do not intend to change them since we are only renting. Therefore..shoes off!

None of my family/friends have a problem with it, and defenitely don't consider it rude.

Re: Shoes Off??

We take off our shoes inside the door and put slippers on, or go barefoot. I only request that people remove their shoes if they are wet or dirty. No shoes is a rule I adhere to, but am not strict about. DH is a different story. He is a neat-freak, and dislikes anyone wearing shoes on our carpets.

I've no wish to make anyone uncomfortable, so we leave it up to our guests. Chat Icon

I have to agree as well.

I do have company (my bro and sil) that always take them off right away, their choice.
I have other family members (parents, sister, inlaws etc.) that keep shoes on.
I have friends that some take them off, some don't.
Completley up to them. I just want them to be comfy.

I was also thinking, as far as you know they don't think it's rude. I also don't tell people who do this how much I hate it, because I don't want to disrespect their wishes or their home. Chat Icon

Re: Shoes Off??

I never ask or tell anyone to take off their shoes in my house. We mostly have wood floors. I would only do that if I had brand new carpet or something.

Re: Shoes Off??

That is a pet peeve of mine. I hate when people ask you to do that. After the first time, I always think twice about going to that person's home. The floor is meant to be walked on and that's what vacuums and carpet cleaners are for.

I do almost always take my shoes off before going into my sons' room. It's very rare that guests ever go upstairs, so it's not really an issue bc that's the only place that's fully carpeted.

Re: Shoes Off??

I don't require anything of my guests other than they relax and have a good time in my home -

I may secretly curse someone for being inconsiderate and trapsing through my house w/ dirty or wet shoes .......but I'd never say anything - unless it was someone very close to me that I could yell at (like DH) !

And really, who cares ? I'm going to clean after you leave anyway, regardless of whether the floors are 'dirty' or not - so why make someone uncomfrotable ? I think it's rude ...........

If you don't want your house to get messy, don't have company !

Re: Shoes Off??

If I were to have people to take off their shoes, I would not expect them to do so before I ask them. In fact, there are some people whose feet I do not want to smell and I would not want them to take their shoes off at my house. I once threw someone's shoes and socks out the front door of my summer rental.

Re: Shoes Off??

absolutely rude. How about if someone had a foot odor problem. How embarrassing for that person. I always want people to feel comfortable, not feel that you have to worry about messing up my house.

Re: Shoes Off??

I also wanted to add that when I go to someone's house, I always ask when I enter "should I take off my shoes." I just really don't see the big deal.

Re: Shoes Off??

My DH grew up in a total neat freak home where no shoes were worn ever! Over the years of us together, i have come to the same feeling but i'm not strict about it.

We NEVER wear shoes in our home, we want to keep our floor clean and not scratched and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

My family takes off their shoes when they come in because they know we don't like it- some have voiced their opinions about it but they comply. My family love to raise debtaes, so it in their nature to challenge anything out of the norm.

For other guests, our shoes are lined up at the door so most people ask if we would like them to remove them and we say yes- if you don't mind. But we don't ever ask them to remove their shoes, so we're not that bad.

Also- i almost immediately remove my shoes in homes that i visit where i know the people- i just don't like to walk around in doors with my shoes on, i think i'm making a mess, hehe.

Re: Shoes Off??

I would never ask someone to take off their shoes in my home! I think it's rude and makes a lot of people uncomfortable. If I was so paranoid about trekking dirt in, I wouldn't chose carpeting, and I especially would not chose light carpeting. But I'm a wood floor girl all the way anyway.

We are having a condo built and when we move in in Dec, I def want people to take their shoes off. When I went to Hawaii last week, I got a cool sign that says "Mahalo for taking your shoes off", Hopefully when they see that sign in the hall and us taking our shoes off, it will work!

AGREED!

I have to agree. I would NEVER think of asking anyone to remove their shoes when entering my home. I want people to feel welcome and at ease when they are here. If they choose to remove their shoes, that's fine, but, I think it is, extremely, rude and in poor taste to ask people to do so.

I could not agree more...I want people to feel comfortable in my home & I think asking to take your shoes off puts people on the spot! Carpet will get dirty & can always be cleaned. If you are really into keeping things clean, don't have the carpet & you won't have to worry what anyone walks on it with

I agree. ITs a home, not a museum, and heck even in museums we can keep our shoes on. Chat Icon

and I love the ones that dont practice what they preach. (ask others to take shoes off at their home, yet trample right on in to other people's homes. Chat Icon

When we first moved in, there was wall to wall WHITE carpeting Chat Icon which I despised (hate white anything) but also because it automatically made peopel feel they HAD to take their shoes off. I didnt like being in that position. Thankfuilly that carpet's long gone.
