Downloading music
I joined napster only to find out that 9.95/month only gets you the song to listen to on your PC. If you want to burn/transfer you have to buy it for another buck. Is this how all the sites are?
ETA: I do not have an iPod or iPhone but I have an mp3 player and phone that does play music.

Re: Downloading music
download limewire - all downloads are free
and in tribute to deb, i'll add....
before anyone says anything - I know it's piracy - I know it's illegal, and I know it's stealing
I accept it, won't sugar coat it, won't try to justify it - and do it anyway.
I only do it from time to time for my ipod - I don't burn and sell CD's - so not sure if my chances of getting caught are that great

i also use limewire. it's free. i burn cd's for myself occasionally, once every couple months or so if there's a bunch of songs i have downloaded and feel like listening to in the car, but i don't sell them or anything. limewire is prob your best bet.

Just don't keep the library of music on your computer because they fine you per song that you have downloaded.

Re: Downloading music
Honestly, I don't believe in downloading music for free. The people you hurt the most are the artists and musicians. If you are a fan of a particular artist, then why not show your appreciation for their work and purchase their CD or download their songs legally? This way, the record companies know that they're popular, the artist makes more money, and more money for the artists means that they can continue to make more music in the future.
You may not think of downloading free music as "stealing" but there is really no other way of putting it.

A friend of mine got sued for having a few thousand songs on his computer. It was a few actual artists suing him for millions!!!!
My advice, download, burn to disc, erase!!!!

Re: Downloading music
I use eMusic and LOVE it. It's $9.99 a month for 30 downloads, $14.99 for 50, or 19.99 for 75 (and you can add ‘boosters’ if you’re on a small plan and want to add 10 songs or so. The songs don't ‘roll over’ month to month so if you only use 25 downloads, you lose the ones you didn’t use. You can put things in your favorites to buy later, though, so if you have a month where you're going 'over' you can save them for a month where you're 'under'. Last Tuesday I wanted 3 new release 'albums' and they had 2 of them, they have a lot there
Here's a link to 'who they are': http://www.emusic.com/about/index.html
ETA: I just realized - I listen to INDIE music, I don't know how they are for mainstream music!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Indie music is music under independent labels, most ‘big name’ artists are on corporate labels like SONY or something!! Just keep that in mind

Yeah, some artists may have money to burn, but it's probably because they've been in the business for a while. What about up-and-coming artists or the small independent bands?...of which there are so many out there now. Would you say that they're "rolling in it"?
Hey, most people will do anything to save a buck. I think the fact that a once mega-music-store like Tower Records has virtually closed up all its stores is a very telling tale about what's going on in music.

Yes, I use eMusic and iTunes together, so after I get something from eMusic I put it in my iTunes library. If eMusic doesn't have it I buy it from iTunes. I buy A LOT of music!
There's a small program that you download with eMusic that 'unzips' the albums after you download them from eMusic, and then I add the whole folder to iTunes. I've been very happy with it so far!

1. Don- I am so proud of you, I don't even need to take my soap box out anymore 2. Bomb-blast 3. Stefanie- MOST artists do suffer. You would be surprised how many people the 14.99 per cd has to get split between...a few off the top of my head: the singer, the songwriter, the musicians, the engineer, the producer, the package designer/photographer, the duplication company, the packaging company, the studio, the lawyers etc etc etc
Think of it this way...shave AT LEAST few thousand off your and/or your significant others salary and tell me if you would notice it or not.

That's fine, but there are other's that may not understand the ramifications of their actions. You understand it and accept it, that's whole other thing over there on the side

No, I don't. But take a look at a few artists like Jay-Z and Beyonce. All I see is them on vacation after vacation...going on yachts, drinking cristal like it's water and living the good life. It doesn't take a genius to see that they're well off.
I'm not saying it's right EITHER...but if some people do it...then whatever they do it.

Ok, let's look at Jay-Z. He's not just a musician. He's also the current president and CEO of two major record labels, he co-owns a chain of sports bars, and co-owner of the NJ Nets. He's one of the best-selling rap artists in history ("selling" being the key word here). He's been putting out music for well over 10 years now.
I'm not really a big fan of Jay-Z but the man has busted his azz coming from the projects in Brooklyn to put himself in the position where he is today. But had all his fans simply downloaded his music for free or bought bootleg CD's off the street all along, he may never be where he is today.
Like I said earlier, people can do whatever they want. I'm sure if you were a musician or if people were stealing money out of your pocket $1 at a time (that's approx how much an artists makes off of every record sold), you might have a different outlook on it.
