Do you believe in "jinxing" yourself?

Yesterday I was just thinking and telling someone how things seem to be getting better (overall) for me - felt like my luck was changing.

Then of course today, I want to run out of my office, jump in the car and drive far, far away....nothing is going right.

I think I totally jinxed myself Chat Icon

Re: Do you believe in "jinxing" yourself?

No, I believe the opposite.

I believe if you focus on the good in your thoughts, words, and actions, you'll attract more good in life; while if you focus on the bad, you'll attract more negative things.

Of course, I also believe that timing isn't instantaneous or even prompt... so keep focusing on the good and the good will come back around.

But... despite what my head tells me, I do seem to "jinx" myself a lot! Chat Icon

See, I believe that is a prat of jinxing yourself, whether it's good or bad. I guess everyone looks at it diferently.

I do believe that when I say somethng will happen or don't have the knowledge of it, THAT is what bites me in the butt!

Re: Do you believe in "jinxing" yourself?

When I think about "jinxing," Ithink about it culturally. Old school yiddish calls it:

Kaynahorah: (kayne-a-hurr-rah) literally, the evil eye. Pronounced in order to ward off the evil eye, especially when speaking of one's good fortune.

(I describe this word as yiddish for "counting your chickens before they are hatched")

"Everyone is the family is happy and healthy, kaynahorah." "He'll be 86 in three weeks, kaynahorah."

Another way to ward off the evil eye is to quickly spit three times (We're not talking hawking a big loogie. This is more like lightly spitting a poppy seed off the tongue.) "My daughter found a nice guy and it looks as if he's going to propose. Pthui, pthui, pthui."

(from www.bubbygram.com)

Yes people still do this. In my family, when we want good things to happen, we often add "G-d willing" to our prayers.

Re: Do you believe in "jinxing" yourself?

DH jinxes or tempts fate...We were in the truck for 6 hours and just getting to the GWB to cross into NY and he said, "Wow, we went both ways withought any issues" I knew this would lead to disaster...not a mile down the road someone cuts me off without an inch to spare and I had to break really hard and pray, then switch lanes without looking to avoid them. This is why I hate driving with him as my passenger, he does this to me all the time.
