NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
This new contract is insane!!! They have us NOW working Mon-Thurs 820-327. The kids will be dismissed at 250 and about 10 kids stay back for tutoring until 327. PLUS they are having us come back the Thur before Labor day. We are one of the only that have to give back in order to get. When your school askes you to vote on the contract VOTE against it!!! We will get our pay we deserve but not at the price they are asking. Go to the UFT website and read up on the other ridiculous asks of us!!!

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
It doesnt and... we gave them 100 minutes last time and now we have to give 50 minutes. what's going to happen the next time we are out of a contract. The minutes will continue to go up. My whole school is definaltely voting against the contract.

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
Bc they are combining the 100 minutes now with the 50 minutes. No more staff development meetings after school

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
Right, there will be no more 100 minutes, it will be spread out over Monday through Friday. An extra 37.5 minutes (and don't you dare sneak out a half minute early! )
Though the Daily News pointed out today that the DOE cannot compel attendance at these sessions. Unless they totally lengthen the school day, you may not see too many kids.

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
Thats why we have to vote agaisnt this contract. My school is having a UFT meeting Tues and we are going to discuss how were going to not vote for it. This happened back in the 80's and the teachers voted agaisnt the contract and they had to draw up a new one. WE HAVE A SAY

If we vote this one down (and I have really, really thought about it) we will not be getting another one as long as Bloomberg is in office. He will not come to the table again; this is just an election ploy, IMO. Ten bucks says that next week we start seeing ads touting the way he worked to get city teachers to work more. And as far as the Taylor Law goes, we would be screwed if we strike, because the city did come to the table. If they hadn't, it would be another story. The UFT is weak, and a strike would weaken it more.

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
WELL.... The flip side to this maybe that who ever takes the place of mayor will want to make a good impression. I have complete faith that we will get a contract either way its inevitable

Doomberg is almost a shoo-in. Ferrer just hasn't made enough waves (and when he has, they have not been in his favor). It does not help Ferrer that he's up against someone who has unlimited funds to spend on his campaign, but that's another thread. We are almost guaranteed 4 more years of Bloomberg. And he, for whatever reason, does not care for teachers, blames the problems in the schools almost entirely on us- nothing in Children First puts any accountability on the parents.
Without getting off topic, if we vote this down, he will not come back to the table. We will have to live with the current contract for 4 more years.
Bloomberg WANTS us to strike. He wants to break the UFT. Then what? The union *****, I will not defend it, but we do have some protection under it. I have a friend whose father missed the birth of his oldest kid because his principal would not let him take the day off. Can you imagine? That was pre-UFT, of course.
I know my chapter leader is spinning it in favor of voting yes. I am wondering how long the school day for suburban teachers is- we were told that if we want parity with the suburbs, it's parity in every way, and they work a longer day (or so I am told)

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
From my undersatnding the suburbs work a regluar 6 1/2 hr day like us. The non-tenured teachers are told to stay until at least 4 bc their every move is watched. BUT... once their tentured they can walk out the door when the bell rings. My aunt works In Garden City thats how i know.

Re: NYC DEPT of ED ELEMENTARY TEACHERS!!!!!!
I'm not an elementary teacher, I teach high school, but everyone by me is worried too. Everyone keeps saying if we agree to this contract, the next one will be even worse and eventually we will be teaching 6 periods. yikes! I already have 170 students, I don't need 34 more!!
