It looks like he will be staying at Jamaica and getting his prosthetic there.

Insurance thought it would be better to have him stay at the acute level rather than go to the subacute level. At the acute level, therapy is much more intense.

So the physicial therapist says that it could take 6-8 weeks for prosthetic training. Combined with the cognitive functions it may be longer. They have to report back to the insurance company each week and give reports. As long as he makes progress they will keep him there. They may just release him home instead of subacute. I was hoping he would be inpatient longer since he really needs it and it will take some time for mom and dad to move here.

That is moving my timeline up considerably. I was hoping to avoid medicaid, but if he has to come home to his own apartment, he will need 24 hr superivision at first. That's about $9000K a month. The catch 22 is that medicaid only allows you to keep about $700 a month and they take the rest.

Who can live on that?

I neve considered that insurance would want to keep him there. It's more expensive in an acute hospital setting than a nursing type home. I guess they figure he will get the max therapy there and why waste time?

I have a lot to consider. Yes, we want him home but he may not ready to be home at that time. Who knows, maybe he will be much better.

I admire your unwavering strength and loyalty during what can only be half-described as a "trying" time.

Your love and devotion from Day 1 when he went to the ER is so amazing

thanks. I know it seems heroic, but what choice do I have? I'm the only one around to do this stuff.

He just called me and told me he didn't eat yet. He said they didn't give him dinner yet but I know they did. This is hard. I told him to call the nurse and tell them you're hungry and he said he would. I hope he does.

There is nothing harder than this. If there is something harder, then I don't ever want to experience it.

I know they say God gives you only what you can handle, but there are times when I feel like running away and never coming back.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm sorry...I know you wanted him moved to North Shore.
But it sounds like he's getting good care where he is. As long as he continues to improve and the insurance company will continue to pay for his care, he sounds like he's in good hands.

you're right. I know he will continue to get the right therapy. There is a disconnect with nursing and therapy there though. I am in the process of working it out. They have new rules not to keep him in bed in a diaper on the weekends. I think because they do that he gets used to not telling them he has to go. The nursing supervisior said that over the last few weeks he has become more amenable and less agitated so she told me in about a week we should see the difference. I hope she's right.

They also told me to stop bringing him meals and let him eat what he's served. It's not helping the whole situation. He has to learn to work with what he has including the food. It' ain't great, but it is what it is.Chat Icon I can still bring him occasional snacks and treats. I think if you do too much for him he gets lazy. That may be a symptom of TBI as well.

Insurance will review him every week and as long as he makes some progress even a little, they will continue. I'm hoping that after, he will get a chance to go to subacute for more rehab.

I felt a disconnet with the nurses and therapist at St Johnlands also. I came to realize, that no matter where DH was it wasn't good enough. I felt nobody would care for him better than me. After awhile you start to feel they are all just patients. But they are more than that to us. KWIM? But as long as I saw DH improving physically and I kept up his spirits he continued to move forward. Once he leveled off it was time to move to a new facility. We're still doing that 2 yrs later.
Hang in there...You're doing a great job getting your brother the best care he can get. He wouldn't and couldn't have come this far with youChat Icon

ETA: you are right, the more you do from them the lazier they get. I definitely learned that!

Re: Freddy

I know Jamaica is thrilled because they get paid loads to have patients there. The social worker said that most people would be happy for this news. Well, I am in a way. I would like him closer and where there's more to do but insurance typically rules things. This is the first time I've seen that in action. They said they will discharge him home after he is ambulatory with the prosthesis. I can't see him ready for that. My dad, keeps assuring me that things will work out. I have a major migraine.

It's true what they say. We plan and God laughs.

that's exactly how i feel. I feel that every decision I make I second guess. I feel that I don't go enough, I don't speak to the staff enough, I am not doing enough.

I have to learn that there are things out of my control. If I have a really bad feeling or instinct I need to trust myself.

He is making more progress physically than mentally although both are improving. Yes, I guess once he levels they will transfer him to subacute.

I do know exactly how you're feelingChat Icon And you ARE doing enough. If you can, try to take a step back and see how far he's come. How do you think he got there? It's because of YOU! You continue to look out for his best interest. Try not to 2nd guess yourself. I know it's hard with all the "what if's". But you've made all the right decisions so far. I know he has a long way to go, but he continues to improve and that's all you can ask for right now. Just try to take it one day at a time.
