Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
learning about this is one of the thngs that spurs me to ACT instead of being passive
there are three cases that I've lived through/read about that have had a PROFOUND effect on me.
Kitty Genovese, Jennifer Levin, and Lisa Steinberg.
it's so so sad.

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
If I remember correctly, Kitty Genovese and Jennifer Levin were very different - JL took place in the middle of the night in the park and I don't think there were ever any witnessess saying they saw things happen, were there?
Everytime I hear about Kitty Genovese, it turns my stomach, esp since this took place in a time when people supposedly cared more...

Agree plus the Levin case got HUGE coverage. she was alone in the middle central park with him at like 4 in the morning.

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
This story really upset my mom and her sibs, since my aunt was about her age. A few years back my mom and I were staying at my grandmother's apartment (my uncle lived a floor below) while my grandma was in ICU. It was a warm night and we had the windows open. All of a sudden we heard a woman screaming "Help me, leave me alone, don't touch me, oh God someone help me!" Well, I never heard so many voices yelling out their windows at the same time "We've called 911, leave her alone, the police are on their way!" My mom was dialing as we heard this (she still called in case other people were just saying that) and my uncle said he called too. They said they couldn't live with themselves if something happened to that woman.

actually, they are all different. I wasn't really comparing them. just listing the three publicized cases that had an effect on the way I think about things. Lisa Steinberg and Jennifer Levin happened when I was a young adolescent.
I read about Kitty Genovese and studied the "Genovese syndrome" in my psych classes in college.
sorry for the confusion.
and you are so right...it is stomach churning...and frightening to think that if it were ME lying there, bleeding, that no one would come out and help.

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
I just saw a show about this yesterday, or the day before? It horrifies me, truly horrifies me. I can see how it happens - I've been in so many situations where something is happening, and everyone just tries to ignore it.
Have you seen the Dateline show where they hire actors to get into a physical altercation in a public park to see the public reaction? One of the scenarios was a mother ridiculing her child. It was so depressing to see the results - so few intervened. It always makes me wonder what is it about a person that makes them sit back, or intervene.

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
When my mother was my age she was walking in NYC and a man stopped his car, and asked her for directions. She ignored him, he got out of the car, and proceeded to try to push her into the backseat of the car.
She told me that there were PLENTY of people on the street, but no one came to help. The only thing that saved her was that she screamed bloody murder, and kicked and punched as hard as she could.
Doesn't matter what generation we're talking about - it happens and has happened.

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
I was just thinking about the Kitty Genovese story yesterday. So sad how no one helped her. Being the victim of a violent crime I wouldn't get to thoughts to getting involved, not just screaming at the perp! So sad I of course wouldn't put myself in harms way but go get help while calling 911!

I wonder why the lack of reaction from people?
Is it the person themself that just freezes up or is it that society thinks they will be blamed/sued/held responsible if they try to help?
This reminds me of a situation where, from my desk, I saw an elderly man teetering back and forth on the verge of a fall. I ran out to help him, but he still fell. I got him up and into the store he was going in.
My boss just watched as I struggled to pick him up. I came back to the office, thanked him for helping me, and he said that he could be sued if the man got hurt because it it. Gimme a break.

I thought because of the Good Samaritan law/act/policy, that you couldn't get sued if you were, in good faith, trying to help someone in need?
Found it: Good Samaritan Statutes (from Google)

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
I actually thought of Kitty Genovese when I was reading the original post this morning.
That was an unbelievable amount of collective disregard for human life though - as opposed to a mouthy teenager scrappy with her mom. So I kept the thought to myself.
I remember hearing about it when i was young and my heart breaking for her.
But I will admit.. even in that case.. I probably would have called the police and not gone down there. But you never know - something that heinous and that obvious at THAT moment... I might have felt compelled to act in a fit of fury.

there was once a woman that intervened when another was being raped, at gunpoint.
the perp actually shot the Good Sam, and she lost functioning of her legs, confined to a whellchair.
she said she wouldn't have changed a thing, and would do it again if she had to.

I didn't know that and I am assuming most others probably don't. People still just don't want to be inconvenienced with the law, testifying, etc. Pretty sad reasoning.

I actually know a doctor that didn't have MD plates on his car, b/c by OATH they are supposed to stop and help people in need, but he was afraid of the lawsuit liability. (even with the Good Sam laws, people still sue) I could not imagine suing someone that was trying to help me...but people do.

Re: Does anyone know/remember the story of Kitty Genovese
This story is discussed in Malcom Gladwell's book "Blink".
I forget what he called it-- but if there are a lot of people there to witness, everyone sorta thinks that it's someone else's responsibility to take control, or handle the situation.
However, if ONE person is witnessing something, or someone in need of help-- they will act because they assume they are the only ones in a position to help.
