Would you have intervened?
Last night, around 7:00 my neighbor was having a VERY loud fight with her teenaged daughter.
I was on my porch, they live 4 houses down and I could hear everything they were screaming.
The gist of it was that the daughter wouldn't get off the phone, the mom flipped out, the daughter called her a b!tch and shouting ensued.
The shouting is one thing, but about 20 minutes into their fight it became obvious the mom was hitting the daughter and she was SCREAMING at the top of her lungs for her to stop.
I felt like we should have called the police or something, DH convinced me that it was none of our business and we should ignore it.
What do you think??

Ok I just re-read, I read it too fast before....in that case, I would call the police as an anonymous caller..

If it's clear that someone is hitting another person, yes, I would intervene - not just for shouting and throwing things though.
Growing up, there was a single mom and her son who lived two houses away - her son had a disability, and she was ALWAYS screaming at him. A few times it clearly got physical, and my parents always called the police when that happened.

I would not have intervened. If it was an infant or a small child, I probably would call the cops anonymously.

Wanted to add that when I was younger, I used to hang out at a pool hall on Larkfield Road, there was a bar right next to it....one night, my friends and I were outside the pool hall waiting for my dad to come and pick us up (we were probably around 15 or so) and we saw this guy and girl outside the bar fighting...all of a sudden, the guy started to hit the girl and they were going at it 
we went inside and told the pool hall worker to call the cops....they did, the cops came and both ppl got arrested.....some crazy stuff

It was obvious. The noise plus she was screaming "Stop hitting me mom."
DH's point was that she was a teenager and that all teenagers can get a little melodramatic and it probably sounded worse than it was.
My issue was that I wouldn't want to find out it had gotten REALLY out of hand and I hadn't done anything about it.

 There is nothing that can be done now. Next time if you feel this strongly I would call them. Even a teenager can be abused by a parent and be to scared to tell someone.

I agree. If it was a child... I would have called the police. As a teen she is probably stronger - and almost certainly FASTER than her mother.
Unless it was evident that there was a severe beating - blood curdling screams of "PLEASE HELP!" then I may have called the police.
Of course I would have felt terrible if I chose not to call and the next day I found out something tragic had happened..

When you call your local police may it be nassua/suffolk or a town...the non-emergency number is always anonymous. 911 is the only place that gets all your info on a screen. Whether or not the kid was getting hit, they were screaming so loud they were disturbing the peace.

so no, I would not call the police, but I would knock on the door today and tell them to keep it down.
