I honestly understand where the op is coming from, I also lived in a neighborhood like that so I know where she is coming from.

I don't think she was trying to offend.

Ditto all of that!

same here!!!!
I have never heard the word ghetto used as a racist word like the other words other posters have said on here.

the word ghetto is more widely used to describe a persons behavior like the word b*tch. Ghetto can be anyone, any color, any race, any place, etc. Its not defining ONE race or place.

whatever the original definition is of the word ghetto , TODAY it is not commonly used that way.

Re: Ghetto Next door neighbors ...

I grew up in a ghetto neighborhood and never, ever take offense to the word.
I use it in exactly the same way to describe the way someone may act. I really don't think it's a deragatory word in a truly negative sense anymore - it's more of an adjective these days.

Re: Ghetto Next door neighbors ...

I guess I can see how there would be people offended. If the word is being used as an adj. I think it is pretty subjective and open to the interpretation off both the user and reader.
What is ghetto to me, might not be ghetto to someone else, true? maybe? me thinks.

I don't understand why so many ppl are up in arms over the use of that word.

how many times do people post a vent on here saying someone they know has "no class" or is "tacky", or worse - MUCH worse!!! those are some pretty offensive words as well. we don't know the people she was venting about, so what's the difference? I seriously doubt she wanted to offend anyone on LIF.

Re: Ghetto Next door neighbors ...

As much as people don't mean nor want to offend people, it happens. It is our current way of life. The word in question means several things and should not be taken lightly similar to other words they are "not" accepted as cool in society. It really odd when you think about it when some words are cool to say (a negative word) but certain terms that refer to race, and culture.

Do we all remember what Imus said a few months ago? As much as he shouldn't of gotten fired for his remarks due to prior precidents set by Howard Stern, I see where peope came from when he directed his comments at a particluar group of people. Not only did Imus drop the Bit** word for the women and ho's, he also called them the word in question today.

And for all those that don't understand where certain ethic or race words come from, don't say its ok because you may not have direct knowledge or the term. Show, when Imus called women B's and H's, you were upset because you can relate to it. Well, now others are upset because it could be related to them or know people in these situations. I for one can relate to the word as I did not have it easy growing up when I was young. So for whatever poster said if you are on this site are not the word in question..what does that mean if you know people that are or came from there?

My two cents are added for whatever its worth Chat Icon

btw, the pictures were funny

This word has a lot of history and a lot of connotations - it can be said with every innocuous intention, but it can also be said by someone with a particular racial bias - because the line is so murky and the potential to offend is so great, I don't know why anyone would use it.

I think it's all about the way you take the word...I personally think it's funny but I would never say it to anyone if I was not sure in what context they would take it. I don't think the OP meant any harm, and Kristen was just warning her....

Stef - LOL Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I love the guy in the trunk!

oh, eta: on Rachel Ray this morning, she had a mom on who made a sprinkler out of plastic jug and a garden house- I thought to myself "how ghetto" LOL - just found it humorous, but to me, the word means skimping on stuff or taking the cheap / easy way out.

hmmmm well i personally dont see a problem with it...i grew up in a ghetto-like neighborhood...we used the term often as an adj. and that is popular to do today anyway..i dont see the big deal in using the word....other words used in the thread however i was a lil offended being used....but i guess its up to the person some people get offended by certain words while others use those same words as terms of endearment....to each his/her ownChat Icon pics were hysterical btwChat Icon

honestly- because this is the real world- not a montessori school.

I dont think people need to look up the history of each word before they use it.

People in England use the word 'Fag' to describe cigarettes, but you wouldnt fault them for using it here, because -despite the history and connotations that it has- it has a different meaning to them.

the funny thing is- most of the people that grew up in Ghetto neighborhoods (myself included) arent even the ones that are offended by the comment- rather, the ones that feel the need to be offended for those who cant be here to be offended themselves. Chat Icon

anyway- if you say that its an "Italian neighborhood".. it would be because Italians live there, right? Well, you can apply the same logic for the english language to the use of the term 'ghetto'. Chat Icon

A ghetto is a densely populated area where people of the same culture or race may live. There are ghettos all over the place. Nowadays, "ghetto" translates into a different definition. Some find it derrogatory. Some find it fabulous.

Well said. I, too, grew up in what would be considered a "ghetto" neighborhood and I don't find the word offensive at all. As soon as I read the original post I knew exactly what she was talking about. So did everyone else. The only "drama" on here was not started by the OP. Some people need to lighten up.

Re: Ghetto Next door neighbors ...

Mimi, your neighbors are ghetto...there I said it...G H E T T O!!!!!!

I moved from the very same type of neighborhood last year. We felt forced to move our house hunting up six months, but I couldn't take them anymore.

Who bbq's in the FRONT of the building???

And I don't miss the lady next door yelling to her kids to get their lazy azzes up and hang outside and do nothing all day!!

Ghetto raised here, so was DH. We use the word all the time. I knew exactly what OP was saying.

My upstairs neighboor is ghetto. Close the windows before you yell at your kids.
