My mother's birth certificate says Margaret ... but I believe the story goes, she was baptized Elizabeth.

She's gone by the name Betty all her life but all her legal things (her work ID/SSN, non-DL, credit cards) are Margaret Lastname.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

My grandmother did. Her name at birth was Frieda. She had it legally changed to Lillian. She died before I was born and I was named for her with the "L" initial and her Hebrew name.

DH's grandmother had her first name legally changed too.

My uncle dropped off his last name and goes by his middle name as his last name. IE: Robert Jackson Clark became Robert Jackson

Mom mom changed her first name during childhood. She hated her name and my grandma must have agreed.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

A very close friend of mine found out right before her wedding that her name on her birth certificate was spelled differently from the way she had been spelling it her whole life.
So she had it legally changed to the spelling she had been using.

My Ex's name was John Timothy and noone knew it...everyone thought his name was Tim and he went by Timmy.

My grandmother changed her name from Elizabeth to Pearl....and then from Pearly to Mona.
She was a little wacky.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

My mom used to go by her middle name when she was younger.

My grandmother was born in Russia and her name was Mania. When she came to the U.S. it was "Americanized" to Mona. When she met my grandfather he thought she looked like an actress whose name was Claire, so he started calling her that. All my life I thought my grandmother's name was Claire. I only learned it was actually Mania/Mona when I was around 20.

My dad also "Americanized" his name when he moved to the U.S. when he was a little boy.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

My mother legally changed her name when I was in 5th grade. It was Margaret, which she always hated, and she changed it to Marie. Her mom and dad were very hurt, but her mom went with it. Took her dad a little while longer to accept it. Personally I think it was a slap in the face to her parents and my mother is mentally ill (no kidding) so it was just another way for her to act out.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

Anyone remember the King of Queens episode where Arthur tells Carrie that he traded names with her cousin - I think he lost a bet or something Chat Icon

I know someone whose name is Franklin Chase but he has always gone by Chase.

Eta: my paternal grandparents changed the spelling of their last name to "de-Germanize" it, since they were in the midst of WWII.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

My great grandmother changed her name when she came here, but I'm not sure which name came first - Celia or Sadie. But she had both.

My grandmother changed her name 4 or 5 times, but never legally as far as I know. If you lined up my dad's birth certificate with his sisters', you'd see a different mother's name on each even though they all have the same parents.

And my cousin had her name changed as a small child to Bambi and then she changed it as an adult to something less porn-star-ish. Legally.

Re: Has Anyone Here...

My friend became really religious and now goes by her Hebrew name. It took her friends from Junior High (like me) a little time to get used to it but that's all she goes by now.

I am not sure if she changed it legally.

My aunt was named "Casey" but my uncle (her younger brother) couldn't say it correctly. He always said "Kiki". Her whole family started calling her that and she legally changed it a few years ago, after about 35 years of the nickname.
